The fact that Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy dedicated a concert overture to the beautiful mermaid Melusine goes back to an experience he had had while attending the opera. While Mendelssohn was hardly enthusiastic about the music, the old mythical material and, not least, the convincing performance of the protagonist quickly inspired him to compose his own piece - and he managed to create a moving atmospheric picture of profound beauty.
