Their paths converged in Vienna – those of the composers Mathilde Kralik von Meyrswalden, Johannes Brahms, and Hermann Grädener. Mrs. Kralik von Meyrswalden, the daughter of a Bohemian glass industrialist, had come to the music capital from Linz. The two somewhat older gentlemen came from Northern Germany: Brahms, as is well known, from Hamburg, and Grädener from Kiel.
