Tchaikovsky's fantasy overture to Romeo and Juliet is considered his first fully-fledged orchestral composition, combining dramatic contrasts with ancient Russian sounds. Inspired by Shakespeare and stimulated by his musician friend Mili Balakirev, Tchaikovsky unfolded a richly colored musical painting full of drama and melancholy.
