Napoleon died in 1821 on Saint Helena, twenty years after Louis-Philippe's France ceased to consider him "socially dangerous" and allowed his ashes to be buried at Les Invalides. Among the crowd on that December 15, 1840, was an exceptional chronicler, the great Victor Hugo.
