Carl Nielsen's Maskarade from 1906, based on Ludvig Holberg's comedy from 1724, is considered Denmark's national opera. The operatic comedy comically and lovingly leaps into the generation gap and is about different worldviews that collide. The calm, cleanliness and orderliness of the past are challenged by the will of youth to do things differently.
