Chamber music as an intimate diary: Shostakovich dedicated his Seventh String Quartet to his recently deceased wife Nina. Johannes Brahms, on the other hand, made a characteristic statement on this topic in his Second Quartet. The work begins with the notes F–A–E – "Frei aber einsam" (“Free but lonely”). The German composer remained unmarried throughout his life.
