Powerhouse pianist Seong-Jin Cho returns to tackle the musical hurdles of Chopin’s First Piano Concerto, written when the composer was only 20 years old. Conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali pairs this with Shostakovich’s final symphony, a powerful yet enigmatic work that contains nostalgic references to a dizzying variety of music — including the composer’s own — and concludes with a sense of peaceful resignation.
