Between the Lines

On the occasion of the release of his latest film La Course au Paradis, the Kokolampoe drama center honors director Stéphane Floricien, whose cinematic work is deeply rooted in Guianese cultures.

The Cinema of Stéphane Floricien

The Touloulou carries within it one of the driving forces of carnival: the reversal of roles. Masked and spectacular, the woman who embodies it becomes, through her dance, her costume, her boldness and her power to choose, one of the queens of the festivities. It is a freedom that also demands courage: stepping into the game, taking risks, and sometimes provoking unrest.

Incognito

In this autobiographical monologue, Matilda tells us how she won her freedom by defying the norms that, because of her identity as a Black, Haitian, intellectual, and gay woman, tried to reduce her to a stereotype. With humor and gravity, she speaks of the social, intimate, and identity-based obstacles that shaped her, but also of the joy of having found her voice.
