A native of the Bronx, Samara Joy became entranced by classic R&B as a child and cut her teeth as asinger in her church’s gospel choir. And while her family history is deeply musical—her grandparents helmed the Philadelphia gospel group the Savettes, and her father, the musician and songwriter Antonio McLendon, has produced, composed and arranged his own astounding original work—she didn’t delve into the jazz tradition until college at SUNY Purchase. During her studies there she won the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, which introduced her to the larger jazz scene as a rising star to watch. She was heard, by audiences and critics alike, as a masterful interpreter of jazz standards and a rightful heiress of the sound, technique and charisma that defined her jazz heroines—including Vaughan, Betty Carter, Abbey Lincoln and Carmen McRae.

Steinway Artist and five-time Grammy Nominee Christian Sands is an emerging jazz force. His abundant piano technique perfectly matches his conception, accomplishing a much deeper musical goal: a fresh look at the entire language of jazz. Whether it’s stride, swing, bebop, progressive, fusion, Brazilian or Afro-Cuban, Sands develops the past while providing unusual and stimulating vehicles for the present… and for the future. He expresses himself through an extensive vocabulary of patterns, textures and structures, all the while maintaining a strong sense of understatement, sensitivity, taste and swing. Jazz history is filled with stirring torch songs and ballads — brilliant expressions of suffering after love has gone awry.

For the past 50 years, BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet has been making some of the most potent and popular Cajun music on the planet. Born out of the rich Acadian ancestry of its members, and created and driven by bandleader Michael Doucet’s spellbinding fiddle playing and soulful vocals, BeauSoleil is notorious for bringing even the most staid audience to its feet. BeauSoleil’s distinctive sound derives from the distilled spirits of New Orleans jazz, blues rock, folk, swamp pop, Zydeco, country and bluegrass, captivating listeners from the Jazz and Heritage Festival in New Orleans, to Carnegie Hall, then all the way across the pond to Richard Thompson’s Meltdown Festival in England.

Our opening program celebrates America’s 250th with three distinct works by a trio of America’s great composers. William Grant Still’s blues-infused Symphony No. 1, “Afro-American,” was the first work by a Black composer to be performed by a major U.S. orchestra and remains one of the most popular American symphonies of all time. Acclaimed pianist Sara Davis Buechner will bring George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue to life in a high-octane celebration of American spirit – a piece that famously blends the gritty soul of the Jazz Age with the sophisticated structure of European classical music. Aaron Copland’s Symphony No. 3, with its iconic focal point—the majestic “Fanfare for the Common Man”—is known as the “greatest American symphony,” celebrating the citizens, laborers, and soldiers of the World War II era.

Vista Philharmonic Orchestra – All American

Concord Chamber Music opens its season with three masterpieces: Mozart’s dramatic G Minor Piano Quartet, Ravel’s dazzling Duo for Violin and Cello, and Brahms’s powerful C Minor Piano Quartet. Artistic directors Daniel Chong and Jessica Bodner are joined by cellist Karen Ouzounian, a singular voice in classical music, and pianist Katherine Chi, renowned for her elegant and deeply committed artistry.

Massachusetts-based “writer song-singer” Heather Maloney found music in the midst of three years at a meditation center, honing a sound moored in days of silent reflection and reverence for storytellers like Joni Mitchell, Rilke, Ken Burns, and the anonymous authors of Zen parables. While she eventually traded the quiet, structured life of a yogi for the kinetic life of a touring musician, the core of her songwriting has remained centered around same curiosity about our inner world and the desire to articulate it through storytelling.

“One of the most important jazz piano albums in history,” wrote DownBeat about Grammy Award winner and Doris Duke Award Artist Danilo Pérez’s groundbreaking 1996 recording PanaMonk—a work now recognized as pivotal in the evolution of Latin jazz. Panamanian born pianist Danilo Pérez revisits the music of PanaMonk on tour, performing Thelonious Monk’s compositions through a Caribbean lens with all-star veterans Ben Street and Adam Cruz. When the trio performed this repertoire at Lincoln Center, The New York Times praised it as “exhilarating...moving...the essence was restrained, assured lyricism.”

Tab Benoit is a 4x Grammy nominated singer, songwriter and guitarist who has built a remarkable 30+ year career on the foundation of his gritty and soulful Delta swamp blues, acquiring a devoted legion of fans along the way, as well as 5 Blues Music Awards, including BB King Entertainer of the Year (twice) and an induction into The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.
