9 to 5 The Musical

Berkeley Rep presents a dazzling world-premiere musical helmed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening, American Idiot, Swept Away), written by two-time Emmy winner Danny Strong (Dopesick, Empire, The Butler). When maverick scientist Galileo Galilei makes celestial observations that challenge humanity’s understanding of its place in the universe, he’s summoned to Rome to defend his discoveries before the most powerful religious institution in the world, which is facing a rebellion of its own.

Galileo

What do a gay cowboy, a slam poetry genius, a revolutionary poet, a naturalist, a couple of starry-eyed lovers, and a doomsayer have in common? They all want to experiment with the theatrical form as members of the Wednesday Club, a group of LGBTQ+ drama nerds (and their allies) who get together to test out their theatrical innovations every Wednesday evening in a church basement.

The Wednesday Club: A New Musical

Riveting Polish countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński is among today’s most sought-after singers, celebrated for his beauty of tone and an uncommon unity of color and polish across his vocal range. Last season he made a thrilling company debut as Orpheus at San Francisco Opera, a performance praised by the San Francisco Chronicle as “radiant and magical,” and he has sung with many of the world’s most esteemed early-music groups. Orliński returns to Berkeley this season with the sensational ensemble Il Pomo d’Oro, in a program of rarely performed works from the 16th and 17th centuries—by Monteverdi, Caccini, Frescobaldi, Cavalli, Strozzi, and others. Orliński’s last Cal Performances recital sold out—with audiences demanding multiple encores—so don’t miss this opportunity to hear a true star at the height of his artistry!

Radiant soprano Renée Fleming graces Berkeley with her star power once again, lending her warmth and sensitivity to a recital program of songs and arias in several languages. Fleming’s shimmering, lustrous voice is the stuff of legends. Affectionately coined “America’s Diva,” only she can claim to have sung at the Super Bowl, on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, at a Nobel Peace Prize ceremony, and at a Presidential inauguration, in addition to all the world’s major opera houses—not to mention boasting five Grammy wins, an indie rock album, and a Tony Award-nominated Broadway appearance. Beyond the opera stage, Fleming’s artistic curiosity has led her to follow her creativity in countless directions, pursuing fascinating projects, collaborations, commissions, and—luckily for us—more of her rare and special recital appearances. In December, she was among the artists celebrated at the 46th Kennedy Center Honors for lifetime artistic achievement.

Welcome to the Renaissance and the outrageous, crowd-pleasing musical farce, Something Rotten. Created by Grammy Award-winning songwriter Wayne Kirkpatrick, and successful screenwriters Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell, Something Rotten was lauded by audience members and critics alike, receiving several Best Musical nominations and hailed by Time Out New York as "the funniest musical comedy in at least 400 years".
Set in the 1590s, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as "The Bard." When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical. But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self, and all that jazz.

In this world premiere commissioned by Berkeley Rep, playwright Christina Anderson brings us a poignant, transporting, and quietly subversive story of racial justice, political legacy, and family forgiveness. Janice’s childhood was steeped in her parents’ activism as they fought for the integration of public swimming pools in 1960s Kansas and taught scores of Black children to swim. But Janice later steps away from her parents’ politics and starts her own life and family far away—until she’s pressed into speaking at a ceremony honoring her father. the ripple, the wave that carried me home is a moving exploration of a family’s response to injustice and a daughter’s reckoning with her political inheritance.

Pulitzer Prize winner Martyna Majok brings us the powerful story of two young DREAMers who fight to establish a place for themselves in America, the only country they know as home. Three-time Tony Award nominee Dave Malloy (Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812) makes his Berkeley Rep mainstage debut with his latest award-winning off-Broadway hit. Eight internet-obsessed people meet in real life to share their stories and wrestle their demons, using nothing but a pitch pipe and the transcendent quality of their analog, a cappella voices. With witty lyrics, shimmering harmonies, and virtuosic solos, Octet sings of connection, redemption, hope—and how we can be truly present with each other.Octet was commissioned and received its world premiere at Signature Theatre Company, where Dave Malloy is resident playwright.

Yemandja, named for a Yoruban deity, is a panoramic work of magical realism, a parable about gods and humans that illuminates through song what can happen when people are robbed of their culture. Kidjo sings her transfixing music backed by a live band and a chorus of dancer-singers, in a fully staged production directed by Cheryl Lynn Bruce and featuring stage design by the revered Black American visual artist Kerry James Marshall; the libretto is by Kidjo’s daughter, Naïma Hebrail Kidjo.

Tony Award-winning director Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening, Hedwig and the Angry Inch<) blew the roof off Berkeley Rep in 2009 with Green Day’s American Idiot. Now he returns with a captivating world premiere musical, this time featuring a book by Tony Award-winning stage and screen writer John Logan (Red Broadway’s Moulin Rouge!, Skyfall, Gladiator), and music and lyrics by “America’s biggest roots band” (Rolling Stone) and multiple Grammy Award nominee The Avett Brothers.
