Directed and choreographed by Tony and Olivier Award-nominated Jennifer Weber, this contemporary dance spectacleis a re-mixed and re-imagined version of the classic, smashing hip hop dance and Tchaikovsky’s timeless music together into a heart-stirring and inspirational holiday event.The Hip Hop Nutcracker is brought to life by a powerhouse cast of a dozen all-star dancers, a DJ, a violinist, and MC Kurtis Blow, one of hip hop’s founding fathers, who opens the show with a short set.

This vibrant movement, sound, and language based-work by dance legend and choreographer Dianne McIntyre explores how dance and music “speak” to each other. With original music by celebrated composer Diedre Murray and poetry by Obie-winning playwright Ntozake Shange, the performance uses dance to explore how language creates worlds of beauty, alienation, harmony, tension or peace. This elegant and captivating work unites a live jazz quartet and a vigorous company of dancers to explore the deep rivers of communication in Black American history and culture.

Nutcracker Magical Christmas Ballet

In addition to the repertory pieces Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rehearsal) and Brandenburgs, the Paul Taylor Dance Company returns to ADF this season with a new piece, Somewhere in the Middle, by Amy Hall Garner which premiered in 2022. Somewhere in the Middle is an adrenaline-fueled dance highlighting the athleticism and beauty of the Taylor Company, all to music of Wynton Marsalis, Count Basie, Sarah Vaughan, Duke Ellington, and other Big Band favorites. Garner marries the Taylor movement DNA to the inherent qualities of the jazz idiom with dizzying effect, reflecting the power, interdisciplinary collaboration, and inherent multi-culturalism in American dance. The 1980 work Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rehearsal) shows a dance rehearsal and a Hollywood noir whodunit which ultimately merge in a clever reimagining of the Stravinsky/Nijinsky masterpiece. Brandenburgs (1988) is elegant and virtuosic. It is choreographic grandeur at its finest married flawlessly within the joyous atmosphere of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos.

BODYTRAFFIC uses the creative spirit of its Los Angeles home as a backdrop for delivering performances that inspire audiences around the globe to simply love dance. The company will present an exploration of identity through dance, showing Love.Lost.Fly by Micaela Taylor, Notes on Fall, a 2021 ADF-commissioned work by Brian Brooks, The One to Stay With by Baye & Asa, and PACOPEPEPLUTO by Alejandro Cerrudo.

American Dance Festival

Performed in the round, the second part of the 11th Organ will be an immersive social choreographic situation centered around a group of performers, who temporarily envision themselves inhabiting a shared imaginary space. The metaphysical space will be initially obscure to the spectator–wholly constructed out of thoughts that resonate into the body. Slowly and inexplicably, the invisible vision will expand to absorb the audience, inviting them into a radically different world of possibilities. The core of the work – a matrix of shared imaginations – will produce a mysterious and alien relational realm, a thick wild mind, cultivated by the performers over the period of a year.

ABT was founded in the fall of 1939 with dual aims of developing a repertoire of the best ballets from the past and supporting the creation of new works by gifted young choreographers. 80 years later, ABT is one of the world’s preeminent classical ballet companies, a world-touring ambassador for the art form, a committed choreographic commissioner, and an energetic leader in ballet education and outreach. All of these qualities animate Duke’s historic multi-year institutional collaboration with ABT, which culminates with this run of performances by American Ballet Theatre at DPAC.
