During the holiday period, the entire Company is immersed in activities surrounding George Balanchine's The Nutcracker®. All 90 dancers, 62 musicians, 40 stagehands, and more than 125 children in two alternating casts from the School of American Ballet join forces to make each performance as magical as possible.

‘Tis the season to swing! In a special holiday revival of the hit show, SW!NG OUT, acclaimed director/choreographer Caleb Teicher and their collaborators (Evita Arce, LaTasha Barnes, Nathan Bugh, and Eyal Vilner) invite you to revel in the joy of social dance and festive cheer! In A Very SW!NG OUT Holiday, Lindy Hop champions bring their talents to The Joyce’s stage with live music by the Eyal Vilner Big Band, including perennial holiday favorites. In the second act, "don your gay apparel" and join the fun by dancing with your loved ones in an onstage post-show jam session!

"A Ceremony of Carols" is a new Christmas tradition, featuring original ballets by Claire Kretzschmar, former New York City Ballet Soloist and Ballet Hartford's Artistic Director. The program begins with the world premiere of "Weihnachtsbaum" with music by Franz Liszt, and culminates in "A Ceremony of Carols" featuring twelve glorious songs by Benjamin Britten. Co-produced by Grammy Award-winning singer Katy Avery, this double feature is elevated by live piano, harp, and choral music.

The company returns to The Joyce celebrating its 50th anniversary as the world’s foremost gender-skewing comic ballet company. Parodying the conventions of romantic and classical ballet with hilarious reimaginings, The Trocks are sure to deliver “the funniest night you’ll have at the ballet” (The Guardian). With two unforgettable programs, highlights include the New York premiere of Durante Verzola's Symphony, inspired by George Balanchine's Symphony in C, as well as Giselle (Act 2), Raymonda’s Wedding, Swan Lake (Act 2), and more!

Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo

“Soulful, imaginative, and rhythmically contagious” (The New York Times), Ragamala Dance Company presents Children of Dharma, the latest work by Bharatanatyam choreographers Aparna, Ranee, and Ashwini Ramaswamy. Their creative partnership as mother and daughters centers South Indian embodied rituals in the immigrant experience—upholding dance as a spiritual practice that can inspire, heal, and transform. Children of Dharma takes inspiration from Keerthik Sasidharan’s novel The Dharma Forest, a re-envisioning of the epic text, The Mahabharata.

Ragamala Dance Company

"Richly expressive and irresistibly kinetic” (New York Times), Ronald K. Brown/EVIDENCE celebrates nearly 40 years of expertly melding traditional African and Afro-Cuban dance with contemporary choreography. Invoking themes of spirituality, community, and liberation, the company returns for its home season at The Joyce with a landmark restaging of Serving Nia (2001) as well as the 25th anniversary performance of Brown’s tour-de-force masterpiece, Grace (1999), interlaces stories of a Goddess’ visit to Earth and a collective journey to the promised land. In the company premiere of  Serving Nia, the thematic sequel to Grace, Brown answers the call to serve a higher purpose than oneself through a rapturous blend of movement traditions from Senegal, Ivory Coast, and Guinea with modern dance forms.

With “technical strength, precision, and passion” (Arts Atlanta), the Havana-based Malpaso Dance Company returns for its tenth engagement at The Joyce. Since its founding in 2012 by Daile Carrazana, Osnel Delgado, and Fernando Sáez, the company remains committed to nurturing new voices in Cuban choreography. Its Joyce program of premiere commissions by local artists brings “stirring new ideas about movement, dance, and the intermingling of social and individual relationships” (CVNC), with live music by the Alma String Quartet. 

Malpaso Dance Company

Balanchine’s multifaceted talent is showcased in a program uniting three classic works. Concerto Barocco, from 1941, is set to Bach’s Concerto in D Minor for Two Violins, and features crystalline choreography for the two lead ballerinas, each representing the voice of one violin, as well as a male dancer and a small corps de ballet. For Allegro Brillante Balanchine returned to a favorite composer, Tschaikovsky, to create a scintillating dance that combines lyricism and buoyancy.

A program devoted to works set to music by the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky is highlighted by two unique Jerome Robbins gems: The Cage, which depicts a swarm of insect-like female creatures descending upon their unwitting male prey, and Concertino, a trio that was originally performed as the third section of Robbins’ Four Chamber Works. Balanchine’s Danses Concertantes, a spirited ballet with richly detailed costumes and hints of commedia dell’arte-inspired humor, opens the program, and his classic leotard ballet Stravinsky Violin Concerto, one of Balanchine’s greatest achievements, brings the affair to a rousing finish.

Compagnie Hervé KOUBI performs What The Day Owes To The Night, a gravity-defying work blending capoeira, martial arts, and contemporary dance. Inspired by Algerian author Yasmina Khadra’s novel,  What The Day Owes To The Night traces Koubi’s own personal lineage as a French-Algerian choreographer. After learning about his family’s Algerian roots, Koubi returned to the country of his ancestors to collaborate with streetdance performers from across the Mediterranean basin. What emerged is “a creation of poetic beauty” (The New York Times), a meditative yet strikingly athletic work about the ties that bind us.

The annual program celebrating Balanchine’s birthday traditionally features a world premiere, in this case the 25th dance from Resident Choreographer and Artistic Advisor Justin Peck, for which Dan Deacon will be providing a commissioned score. The program opens with Christopher Wheeldon’s From You Within Me, set to Arnold Schoenberg’s early work Verkläkte Nacht, featuring a cast of a dozen dancers and painter Kylie Manning’s atmospheric drops at the front and back of the stage. Balanchine is represented by one of his most strikingly enigmatic works, Variations pour une Porte et un Soupir, a pas de deux for a woman swathed in a huge, billowing skirt, personifying the “door” of the title, and a man as the “sigh,” illustrating the otherworldly Pierre Henry score.

New Combinations

The Company honors the centenary of Maria Tallchief’s birth with three Balanchine works created on the great ballerina. Tallchief danced in the 1952 premiere of Scotch Symphony, a romantic ballet in which Balanchine paid homage to the dramatic landscape and atmosphere of the Scottish Highlands. A pas de deux inspired by the full-length Sylvia returns to the repertory after 30 years, and features intricate classical steps that highlighted her spectacular technique. And Tallchief was also renowned for her performance in the title role of Firebird, an allegorical fantasy set to Stravinsky’s brilliant score.

Award-winning director and choreographer Camille A. Brown deepens her explorations of Black joy in the New York premiere of I AM. While Brown has often disrupted our understanding of the past, in this new work, she imagines a creative space for cultural liberation and launches queries into the possibilities of imagination that boldly investigate the future. Inspired by a narrative within the drama television series Lovecraft Country and the rhythms of the movie Drumline, I AM picks up where ink (2017) left off by blasting us into the universe where anything is possible through various dance and music genres of the African Diaspora. The work includes captivating, live, and original music by Deah Love Harriott, Juliette Jones, Jaylen Petinuad, and Martine Wade.

Jerome Robbins’ intimate knowledge of Chopin’s piano works illuminates the delicate beauty of In the Night, set to the composer’s nocturnes and featuring the romantic interplay among three couples set against a backdrop evoking a starry night sky. Balanchine’s ever-popular leotard ballet Symphony in Three Movements ranks among the most exhilarating dances he created to the music of Stravinsky, with its driving energy matching the fierce pulse of the score. Rounding out the evening is a world premiere from Artist in Residence Alexei Ratmansky, his eighth dance commissioned by the Company.
