Written collaboratively by composer Jake Heggie, called “arguably the world’s most popular 21st-century opera and art song composer” (The Wall Street Journal); Booker Prize–winning author Margaret Atwood (The Handmaid’s Tale); and JUNO Award–winning baritone Joshua Hopkins, Songs for Murdered Sisters is an arresting song cycle and urgent plea inspired by Hopkins’s own devastating loss. Mahler’s Ninth Symphony, the last the composer completed, is a transcendent piece also born in trying circumstances—but not without hope.

Italian Conductor and violinist Damiano Tognetti began musical studies at the age of seven with Maestro A.Fornai and graduated in 2001 from the “Boccherini” Musical Institute in Lucca under the guidance of Maestro A.Bologni. He was first violin and soloist of the institute’s orchestra. Having perfected his skills at the Fiesole Music School, he was the winner of several national competitions. Already a member of the Cherubini Orchestra of Piacenza directed by Riccardo Multi, he collaborates with various orchestras including Orchestra del Teatro Massimo di Palermo, Orchestra da Camera Fiorentina, Orchestra Regionale of the Emilia Romagna Tuscan Foundation, Orchestra of Padua and Veneto, Venetian Regional Orchestra.

Chamber Orchestra of New York’s Valentine’s Day concert features clarinetist Benjamin Baron in Aaron Copland’s Concerto for Clarinet. Under the direction of Music Director Salvatore Di Vittorio, the program will begin with Edward Elgar’s Sospiri (Sighs) and conclude with Richard Strauss’ Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme (The Bourgeois Gentleman).

GRAMMY Award–winning singer-songwriter Aoife O’Donovan joins the ensemble to perform America, Come, an original suite inspired by the lives, letters, and speeches of Carrie Chapman Catt and President Woodrow Wilson in the summer of 1920, when the suffragists made their pivotal march to Tennessee. Orpheus returns to 92NY's stage with Noah Bendix-Balgley, concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic and a leading soloist and chamber musician. A lifelong champion and performer of klezmer music, he joins Orpheus to perform a concerto based on traditional klezmer melodies and folk-inspired classical works by Brahms and Bartók.

The ASO’s first concert at the new David Geffen Hall focuses on music of composers who came of age in the 1920s. Chief among them was Edgard Varèse.

Varèse’s symphonic poem Arcana (1925-27) explores the mysterious and powerful nature of the constellations above. Varèse took his inspiration for the work from topics of alchemy and astrology—in particular, from writings by 16th-century physician and practicing astrologer Paracelsus. Upon opening the printed score, inscribed is a quote that muses, and then concludes as follows:
