Music Director Franz Welser-Möst leads a powerful program bookended by Beethoven: his Leonore Overture No. 3 distills an entire opera into its most poignant themes, while his Fifth Symphony creates an epic musical journey out of just four iconic notes. Richard Strauss’s Metamorphosen takes thematic transformation even further, layering quotations from Beethoven symphonies in a stirring meditation on the destruction of World War II.

World-renowned cellist Steven Isserlis joins New World Symphony to play the final concerto of William Walton. Under the baton of Leonard Slatkin, the evening builds to the lively tarantella finale of Rachmaninoff’s Second Symphony.

Memorable melodies and inventive variations abound in this program of 20th-century showpieces. French pianist Alexandre Kantorow brings electrifying virtuosity to Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, which transforms a famous violin caprice into a stunning tour de force. Framing the program are two orchestral favorites: Britten’s dazzling tour of the orchestra and Elgar’s Enigma Variations, a personal and reflective tribute to the composer’s dearest friends.

Violinist Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider brings the rugged beauty of the Scottish Highlands to the concert hall in Bruch’s folk-inspired Scottish Fantasy. Joined by members of the New World Symphony, The Cleveland Orchestra then journeys south to Italy with two vibrant tone poems by Respighi: Fountains of Rome and Pines of Rome. It’s whirlwind European getaway; no passport required.

Observing humanity across countless events and generations, trees help us better understand our relationship to the world. Featuring live music and narration alongside archival footage and interviews with luminaries like Dame Judi Dench, this documentary film is assembled on stage at New World Center.
