Dance meets Gothic and the pipe organ stars. The Seattle Symphony ushers in 2025 with Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony, its every measure brimming with the kinetic energy and impetus of dance rhythms. The mighty Watjen Concert Organ stars in the Gothic brilliance of Francis Poulenc’s Organ Concerto, performed by acclaimed organist Paul Jacobs. And we visit Poulenc’s wickedly funny ballet The House Party — a delightful musical depiction of risqué flirting that made his name as well as causing a minor scandal in 1920s Paris. A dance, a party and an organ fanfare — what better way to start the new year?

Uproar greeted Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, ushering in a musical revolution with its depiction of violence and Pagan ritual. The Seattle Symphony is proud to have co-commissioned a new work by Brian Raphael Nabors. Drawing inspiration from Maya Angelou’s writings, he celebrates the dawn of a new day of peacemaking. And Mozart’s sublime 22nd Piano Concerto strikes a balance between storms and blue skies, with Jan Lisiecki back on our stage by popular demand.

Seth Krimsky brings friends to perform Chick Corea’s dreamy early trio, drawn from his piano jazz improvisations. The vibe continues with Herrerías’ intricate and urgent dance rhythms, and a new work by Seth Krimsky himself. Then Brittany Breeden’s quartet of friends explores unique Americana drawn from the Deep South. In At The Octoroon Balls, Wynton Marsalis was inspired by creole musical traditions, translated for string quartet: fiddle reels, hoe downs, jug stomps and marching bands.

Gustav Holst, a keen student of astrology, seized on the different characters assigned to our planets to compose his masterpiece. Each planet brings different feelings and startling effects, from Mars’ shattering depiction of war to Neptune as it drifts away into space and ethereal voices fade into silence. Breathtaking high-definition imagery from NASA showcases our solar system’s heavenly bodies.

Since winning joint Gold Medal at the 2009 Van Cliburn Competition, Nobuyuki Tsujii has become an international piano star. His performances are unforgettable. Power, emotion and precision have won him lasting fame. Here, he returns to Benaroya Hall to play Rachmaninov’s famous Third Piano Concerto, which demands thunderous power and feather touch from its soloist almost in one moment. Brahms’ final symphony, the Fourth — full of beauty and warmth but also tinged with melancholy — completes the program. In this symphony, Brahms weaves a complex web of musical ideas, culminating in a call back to the majesty of a Baroque dance rhythm — the Chaconne — on which he builds a mighty finale.

This concert is about the music that comes when we long for home. Dvořák’s "New World" Symphony captures the energetic elements of music he heard in America, dosed with a heartfelt nostalgia for his homeland. The result is one of the warmest celebrations of looking forwards and back. It’s no surprise that a recording of this symphony even made its way onto Apollo XI. Raymond Yiu’s Violin Concerto meditates on exile, inspired by the life of composer Ma Sicong, who fled China to build a new life in the U.S. And in his Romanian Folk Dances, Bartók finds inspiration in authentic regional folk music.

Schulhoff’s Concertino sings with humor belying its composer’s tragic story, a victim of the Holocaust. Emerging composer August Baik brings a new piece. Adès’ Alchymia meditates on Elizabethan England’s fascination with alchemy. Our series culminates with Mozart at his most sublime, the second “Prussian” Quartet.

Prepare to be swept off your feet as Dalia Stasevska returns to Seattle with a program celebrating the rhythms of Mexico and Argentina. The Night of the Maya pulsates with a huge percussion section, traditional instruments and a full orchestra. Originally composing for a 1939 film score, Revueltas created an orchestral suite to give this music a life in the concert hall. Malambo illustrates the infectious rhythms of Argentinian gaucho dance traditions. And beloved collaborator Augustin Hadelich brings Prokofiev at his most wickedly daring with the First Violin Concerto — a concert that could very well raise the roof of Benaroya Hall.

Crescendo: A Symphonic Celebration of Washington Landscapes

For one night only, we welcome an artist whose music shows us our shared humanity. Yo-Yo Ma joins the Seattle Symphony to perform Elgar’s greatest masterpiece, his immortal Cello Concerto. Conductor Joshua Weilerstein brings companion music — the heroic Egmont Overture and Dvořák’s brilliantly stormy Seventh Symphony.

Tan Dun brings two characteristically beautiful and thoughtful works to Seattle. Nu Shu: The Secret Songs of Women was inspired by the remote Chinese village Nu Shu, where the women pass down knowledge of their own unique language, mother to daughter. Sound River, which has its U.S. premiere with the Seattle Symphony, is a tribute marking the 700th anniversary of the death of Marco Polo that delves into the music and culture the explorer encountered on his legendary travels along the silk route to China and back.

All the families of the orchestra come together to present the full symphony experience. Perfect for families with children from birth to 5 years of age. Engage your youngest music lovers with these 35-minute interactive programs featuring musical games, stories and songs. Pre-concert include crafts, percussion play, a xylophone orchestra and reading station.

“In the Beginning ….” This telling of Genesis is a choral gem of the Age of Enlightenment. Haydn draws out the story of the Creation and embroiders it with scintillating word-painting, depicting all the wonders of the first six days. Beginning in Chaos, we hear the birth of the universe, light dividing from dark, earth from water. Soon we are joined by all the charming and cheerful beasts that populate it! Conductor David Robertson is joined by a starry cast of soloists and the Seattle Symphony Chorale to depict all the joys of the cosmos.

Join us for an evening of electro-acoustic world premieres performed by Seattle Symphony musicians! This performance features works composed by the students of the Symphony’s Merriman-Ross Family Young Composers Workshop and is the capstone of a 15-week composition course led by acclaimed composer and electronic music specialist, Marcin Pączkowski.

Here is Beethoven at his most optimistic and exultant, writing a piece that would come to redefine the expressive power of the concerto. And here is a superstar of the violin to perform it for us: the incomparable Hilary Hahn returns to Seattle to play Beethoven as only she can. Music Director Designate Xian Zhang returns to Seattle for this powerhouse program, which also includes Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony. Composed in 1944, it looked to a horizon beyond the devastation of war. Its first performance in Moscow was punctuated by a victory salute of cannon fire, signaling the final campaign to end the war. Prokofiev marked the end in sight with a scurrying dash to the final victory.

Dive into Maurice Ravel's wildly famous Boléro, with its unmistakable opening bars — full of steady, persistent drumming and enchanting melodies for solo woodwinds. Conductor Emeritus Ludovic Morlot completes our season-long celebration of Ravel with this exciting program, which also includes the ravishing and evocative Rapsodie espagnole. A brand-new flute concerto for Principal Flute Demarre McGill arrives on our stage, courtesy of Allison Loggins-Hull. We also feature our mighty brass and percussion sections one final time before the summer in a rarely heard thriller by Gunther Schuller.
