The symphony’s theatrical and dramatic finale culminates in titanic “hammer blows of fate” that are said to represent tragic milestones in Mahler’s life.

Mozart left his Mass in C minor only about a third complete, but what’s there of this “noble torso” is vast, inspiring, and filled with some of his most gorgeous vocal writing—including an aria for his new wife Constanze.
