Beethoven channels the raw, kinetic energy of dance in his sweeping Symphony No. 7. Crackling with heightened drama and glorious melodies, Beethoven gets the pulse racing with vibrant ballroom dances and dizzying country fiddling. “If anyone plays the Seventh,” Wagner once wrote, “tables and benches, cans and cups, the children in the cradle fall to dancing!”

Hot jazz meets cool French elegance in Gershwin’s An American in Paris, which follows one tourist’s adventures as he dodges taxis along the bustling Champs Elysées, parties in the city’s dance halls and feels pangs of homesickness.

Ravel & Gershwin

“I was once destined for the life of a sailor,” Debussy wrote, “but I still have a great passion for the sea.” The French composer honors that lifelong passion in La mer — three shimmering musical portraits of rippling waves, brewing storms and the sun’s celestial journey across the sky.

A work of volcanic drama, Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 comes to life in a powerhouse performance from Tom Borrow, a “sensational” pianist who displays “a touch both light and powerful” (Cleveland Plain Dealer). Prepare to be jolted by the thunderous, curtain-raising chords, savor the tranquil sounds of Ukrainian folk songs and leap out of your seat following the concerto’s jubilant conclusion.

Brahms wrestled with self-doubt and frustration for 21 years while composing his Symphony No. 1 — an artistic battle we can hear in the roar of sound that opens the work. Amid the drama and angst, however, Brahms’ symphony also showcases his gentler side, journeying through moments of heavenly lyricism and playful dances before ending in a brassy blaze of triumph.

Brahms may have taken 25 years to compose a violin concerto for his close friend Joseph Joachim, but it was well worth the wait. From moments of ethereal poetry to the foot-stomping finale inspired by Hungarian dance music, Brahms’ Violin Concerto unleashes the instrument’s expressive potential — making it the perfect vehicle for violinist Randall Goosby’s “simmering heat, polish and power” (Musical America).

To address gender imbalance on opera podiums, TDO launched The Linda and Mitch Hart Institute for Women Conductors, the only program of its kind, to train women conductors in 2015. More than 500 candidates from 40 nations have applied to be trained, advised, and supported by this extraordinary leadership initiative over the past decade.

This groundbreaking institute has helped change the face of classical music by significantly advancing the careers of women in the most visible position in the orchestra. The culmination of each season’s program is a festive Showcase Concert where each participant conducts The Dallas Opera Orchestra and guest singers in a program of operatic favorites in the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House.

Fiery emotion and virtuosity have come to define Liszt’s piano music. And while the Hungarian composer’s Piano Concerto No. 2 has plenty of pyrotechnics, it also offers countless moments of graceful lyricism. Jean-Yves Thibaudet — “the most soulful of players” (Gramophone) — returns to the DSO to perform Liszt’s luminous concerto, a work of power that flows in one continuous river of sound.

With music of fire and ice, Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2 blurs the boundaries of musical storytelling. Sibelius considered his radiant symphony to be “a great river flowing to the sea,” but generations of Finns have heard in its glorious conclusion their country’s quest for freedom from Russian rule. As Sibelius’ symphony journeys through moments of serenity, turmoil and triumph, what will you hear?

Sibelius, Brahms & Vaughan Williams

Dvořák’s tranquil Symphony No. 8 took shape following a summer holiday in the Bohemian countryside, its vibrant landscapes captured in a stream of Czech folk song and Dvořák’s lush melodies. Listen closely and you’ll hear the sounds of summer — from fluttering birdsong to the echoes of a shepherd’s horn and a distant thunderstorm.

From its opening scene of bird song and morning mists to a final chorus of victory sung by an army of horns, Mahler’s First Symphony traces a captivating coming-of-age journey. Mirroring his own life experiences, Mahler’s music evokes scenes of sun-drenched meadows, a surreal funeral procession and triumph over despair and self-doubt.

A kaleidoscope of dazzling orchestral colors, Lutosławski’s Concerto for Orchestra celebrates the musical traditions of the composer’s native Poland. But rather than using Polish folk tunes as a springboard for nostalgia or nationalism, Lutosławski weaves them together into a modernist tapestry of explosive emotion — from the sinister drumbeats that drive the opening dance to a finale of electrifying joy.

From the hushed drumbeats and soulful winds that open the work, Beethoven’s violin concerto trades in show-stopping fireworks for moments of breathtaking pastoral poetry. DSO Concertmaster Alexander Kerr serves as the evening’s soloist, ready to warm our hearts with melodies of sublime tranquility, harmonies of unassuming beauty and a rollicking finale that evokes Austrian folk dances.

Mendelssohn & Beethoven with Alexander Kerr

Opening with two chords of seismic power, Beethoven’s groundbreaking “Eroica” Symphony redefined the 19th-century symphony as a musical odyssey of vast emotional scope. Battles rage and harmonies clash with wild abandon as Beethoven channels the turbulent world around him, confronting grief and despair before ending in a heroic blaze of glory.
