Juilliard Jazz Ensembles | From the Plantation to the Penitentiary by Wynton Marsalis

Jazz at Lincoln Center

The student performers in this ensemble will showcase the art and practice of solo performance, from individual solo works to presentations of concert length programs, with a high degree of improvised material combined with careful preparation. Students have developed work based on thematic and structural elements, using both song form and open form improvisation, and have explored the ways these ideas can be combined. Players of single line instruments, vocalists, and percussion - as well as players of chordal instruments, which have the longest tradition of solo performance - are all welcome. Students recompose standards in a personal way to enhance a solo performance. The work of important solo improvisors like Cecil Taylor, Marilyn Crispell, Charmaine Lee, Evan Parker, Max Roach, Sylvie Courvoisier, Mary Halvorson, Anthony Braxton, Ikue Mori, and Thelonious Monk are mined for inspiration. Peter Brainin is a 3x Grammy and Latin Grammy winning saxophonist, composer and educator who has toured internationally with Mongo Santamaría, Valery Ponomorev, Hilton Ruiz, Bebo Valdez, Chico O’Farrill, Bobby Sanabria, Arturo O’Farrill & the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra (with whom he’s featured on 2 Grammy winning CD’s), Joris Teepe, Willie Colon & Legal Alien, Samuel Torres, the Mambo Legends Orchestra and John DiMartino as well as with his own quartet and as a guest artist and clinician. In the U.S. he has performed and/or recorded with Wynton Marsalis, Benny Golson, Randy Weston, Harold Mabern, Idris Muhammad, Jerry Gonzalez, Paquito D’Rivera, Israel “Cachao” López, Sheila E., Eddie Palmieri and many other Jazz and Latin Jazz legends. Peter has appeared on over 200 albums including his own as co-leader with Steve Johns (which also feature contributions by Conrad Herwig, George Cables and Ben Monder) and with the quartet Native Soul. A native of the Bronx, he twice received the BRIO (Bronx Recognizes its Own) award for music composition from Bronx Council on the Arts.

The Universal Temple of the Arts Staten Island JAZZ Festival 36, returns to the St. George Theatre, featuring a very dynamic and charismatic next generation of jazz musicians who reflect the diverse tapestry of jazz and its evolution – Esteemed Saxophonist, composer, and vocalist Camille Thurman will perform with her Quartet; innovative Harpist Brandee Younger; regal Vocalist, Alicia Olatuja’s Ensemble and the 3x Grammy-nominated, Saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin and her Ensemble. Faithful fans of the longest-running community jazz festival and first-timers are in store for a joyful, hip, eclectic night of jazz.

Eight-time Grammy winner Billy Childs has “sidestepped categorization as an intrepid hard bopper” (The New Yorker), collaborating with jazz luminaries like J.J. Johnson, Joe Henderson, Wynton Marsalis, and Dave Holland, as well eminent classical and contemporary artists including Yo-Yo Ma, Sting, and the Kronos Quartet. Admired for his versatility, technical mastery, and deep emotional expression, the renowned pianist and composer makes his Miller debut with his all-star quartet.
