Amaro Freitas describes himself in an interview as a "percussion pianist," and indeed, he infuses the piano with drumming qualities in his shimmering Brazilian jazz compositions. And so much more! Two topics are particularly dear to Freitas's heart: preserving the unique natural environment of his native Brazil and the "decolonization of jazz," as he calls his musical journeys into the indigenous musical cultures of Brazil and Africa.

Accordion star Martynas Levickis travels across the Atlantic and back to Europe. His Lithuanian roots connect him to Philip Glass and Aaron Copland, and his fascination with jazz with George Gerswhin. For his musical journey to North America, he has the perfect partners: the New York ensemble The Knights, led by brothers Colin and Eric Jacobsen. They are enthusiastic about playing and experimenting, and just like Martynas Levickis, they love to blend classical music with folk and jazz elements to create exciting programs. The focus is on Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, one of the first works to make jazz suitable for the concert hall. Today, it's an absolute classic!

When the music of jazz pianist Omer Klein, born in Israel in 1982, is described as "boundless" (New York Times), this is meant quite literally: Klein composes for solo piano and big band, for jazz trio and orchestra, for theater, dance, and film. He has regularly thrilled audiences in Hamburg with the Omer Klein Trio in recent years. Now he's doubling down – returning to the Great Hall with his newly formed sextet, The Poetics, featuring two saxophones and percussion.

»Gondwana Records Presents« is probably the label’s most established concert evening, which it curates every year together with Konzertdirektion Palme and to which three of the most captivating artists from the label’s programme are invited each time. The fifth edition of the showcase will take place in 2026. Two of three incredible acts have already been announced: The Ancient Infinity Orchestra, a spiritual jazz ensemble from Leeds, and Gondwana Records’ latest addition Ambre Ciel, a composer, violinist, pianist and vocalist from Montreal take the stage. They will present their latest material in special formations. Another artist will be announced at a later date.

This duo, which has been playing together blindly for over three decades, forms the grand finale of the "Reflektor" festival at the Elbphilharmonie, curated by Brad Mehldau. Pianist Mehldau, equally influenced by Franz Schubert, Keith Jarrett, and Radiohead, joins bassist Christian McBride, big band founder and great swing master.

Brad Mehldau is one of the most exciting voices in contemporary jazz piano. In his performance, improvisation meets structure, freedom meets rigor, jazz meets classical and pop, his own songs meet new, often daring interpretations of others' music. Brad Mehldau's solo concert at the Elbphilharmonie will be a source of excitement to see where his musical journey takes him. Destination unknown for now.

Political art is becoming increasingly important in times of increasing marginalization and simple truths – and not only in the USA. On her latest album, bassist and singer Meshell Ndegeocello enters an ever-changing dialogue with the life and work of African-American writer and queer civil rights activist James Baldwin. His fight for freedom is also her fight.

Wolfgang Muthspiel is one of the most influential jazz guitarists of our time. In the 1980s, the man with the smooth guitar sound and unerring picking technique left his native Austria for the USA, where he quickly made a name for himself with his versatile playing. He enhanced records by singers such as Rebekka Bakken, Maria João, and Youssou N'Dour and was invited to concerts and studio recordings by jazz giants such as John Patitucci. Since then, he has continued to expand into new spheres. In 2018, he introduced a new all-star trio with Scott Colley on bass and living legend Brian Blade on drums, both of whom enjoy the trust of greats such as Herbie Hancock and John Scofield.

Maria Baptist is one of the most exciting pianists in contemporary jazz. In her new programme »The Solo Works«, she combines current compositions with central works from her repertoire - including the piano cycle »Hopes & Fears«, which was nominated for the German Record Critics’ Award.

In Christian Fennesz's music, time seems to stand still and space dissolve. Since the 1990s, the musician has shaped the electronic music scene in Austria and far beyond. He creates his complex, multi-layered ambient sounds around the guitar. Often distorted beyond recognition, the instrument is Fennesz's trademark and unique selling point.

"You feel almost embraced by the transparent harp sounds. There's no question that Brandee Younger has captured the hearts of the Hamburg audience with her music and charisma," enthused the Hamburger Abendblatt when the charismatic jazz harpist Brandee Younger made her debut in the Recital Hall of the Elbphilharmonie in October 2023. And even then, it prophesied: "The next time she comes, her path will probably lead not to the Recital Hall, but to the Grand Hall." How true!

Joja Wendt’s New Year concert in the Elbphilharmonie kicks off the New Year in exuberant, genre-transcending style. Traditionally, it’s an evening full of musical surprises with a reasonable chance that Hamburg’s incumbent mayor, Till Brönner, Tom Gaebel, Götz Alsmann or musical companions such as Inga Rumpf and Abi Wallenstein will drop by as surprise guests.

Double bassist, composer, singer, and orchestra leader – the musical life of the French master Henri Texier has many facets. One of these was his intensive engagement with the indigenous peoples of America, to whom he dedicated a trilogy of albums. At the Elbphilharmonie, the Henri Texier Septet performs the profound music of "An Indian's Life."

James Holden, a British hero of the electronic music scene, and Wacław Zimpel, experimental jazz clarinetist and multi-instrumentalist, share a common passion: trance states in and with music. They have been working together for several years, and the EP "Long Weekend" is now followed by "The Universe Will Take Care of You," a program that once again promises multifaceted beats and synth sounds that oscillate between rave, jazz club, and South Indian musical traditions.

The two simply have a connection: Catalan guitarist Juan Gómez "Chicuelo" and Spanish pianist Marco Mezquida. They have known each other since 2013 and celebrate a deep musical alliance of flamenco and Latin jazz. Together with their long-time accompanist, the congenial percussionist Paco de Mode, they present their latest album "Del alma."

Linda May Han Oh is one of the most sought-after bassists on the international jazz scene. She has played with Pat Metheny, Terri Lyne Carrington, and Vijay Iyer, and released her sixth album as a bandleader, "The Glass Hours," in 2023. In it, the Australian explores moving themes such as isolation during the coronavirus pandemic, death, and motherhood.

Anyone who associates the lute only with early music isn't familiar with David Bergmüller. The Austrian brings his instrument into a wide variety of contexts, genres, and eras. His latest solo project, "Know Thyself," which premiered in Vienna in early 2025, combines lute sounds in an atmospheric and poetic way with synthesizer sounds, loops, and effects.

The legendary drummer Wolfgang Haffner has been on stage for 50 years. That’s a reason to celebrate! Haffner is gathering together an illustrious list of guests, friends and companions who have made their mark on his career. Who exactly will be there remains a surprise for the time being. What is certain is that it will be a jazz concert in a class of its own.

Immanuel Wilkins is no longer an insider tip. He first attracted international attention five years ago when his debut album, "Omega," was named "Jazz Album of the Year 2020" by the "New York Times" – at the time, the Philadelphia saxophonist and composer was just 22 years old. Two years later, he and his quartet performed at the Elbphilharmonie's "Fast Lane" series, and most recently, he thrilled Hamburg audiences in November 2023 at guitarist Bill Frisell's "Reflektor" festival. He has since released his third album, which he now presents, once again with his quartet, at the Elbphilharmonie.
