Amy K. Bormet is a pianist, vocalist, and composer renowned for her fearless and free-wheeling style as well as her dedication to creating new music. Seamlessly fusing elements of jazz and the avant-garde, her performances and compositions reflect her deep musical knowledge and bold experimentation. In 2011, Bormet created the Washington Women in Jazz Festival, an initiative aimed at fostering creative community spaces by and for women and non-binary artists of DC’s celebrated improvisational music communities.

In September 2021, The Metropolitan Opera reopened after being closed for over a year and kicked off its season with Terence Blanchard’s Fire Shut Up In My Bones—the first work written by an African American composer in the institution’s 138 years. Based on the best-selling 2014 memoir of Charles M. Blow, a journalist for The New York Times, with a libretto by Kasi Lemmons, the opera explores Blow’s struggles to transcend and overcome a cycle of violence.

Renowned for her stunning vocals that convey a sense of intimacy and emotion, Luca Mundaca’s original compositions blend the sounds of her native Brazil with influences drawn from downtown New York. Her music mines the deep melodic roots of her country’s heritage, combining elements of jazz and bossa nova influences with lyrics in Portuguese. Many of her songs represent a timely exploration of our relationship with nature and the world around us.

With the release of his first album, Bright Size Life (1975), Pat Metheny revolutionized the traditional "jazz guitar," captivating a new generation of musicians. Throughout his career, he has continuously redefined the genre, exploring new technology and pushing the boundaries of improvisational and sonic potential on his instrument. Collaborating with diverse artists like Steve Reich, Ornette Coleman, Herbie Hancock, Jim Hall, Milton Nascimento, and even David Bowie, Metheny’s body of work spans compositions for solo guitar, small ensembles, electric and acoustic instruments, large orchestras, ballet pieces, and the robotic Orchestrion project, defying the constraints of any single genre.

Playing acoustic bass, Zoë Jorgenson strums up an eclectic evening of modern jazz and original compositions inspired by acclaimed contemporary instrumentalists.

His newest album, In These Times, is the triumphant finale of a project more than seven years in the making. It’s a preeminent addition to his acclaimed and extensive discography, and it’s the album he’s been trying to make since he started recording. In These Times is a collection of polytemporal compositions inspired as much by broader cultural struggles as it is by McCraven’s personal experience as a product of a multinational, working-class musician community.

Revered as one of the greatest jazz drummers of all time, Max Roach was among the first to use music to address social, political, and racial issues of his time. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, led by Music Director Wynton Marsalis, celebrates the centennial of this trailblazing musician and bandleader, whose innovative style influenced generations to come. He was an influential member of the Charlie Parker-Dizzy Gillespie Quintet, performed alongside Miles Davis on his seminal Birth of the Cool album, and formed the Clifford Brown-Max Roach Quintet. In 1961, Roach collaborated with his wife, the pioneering singer-songwriter Abbey Lincoln, and said in an interview with Downbeat Magazine that he would only play music that had social significance.

Fusing jazz with K-pop, traditional Korean music, hip hop, and more, pianist Alfred Yun performs original compositions that reflect his experience growing up in Korea and the United States.

Claiming a wide territory for their unusual medium, Strata traverses a world of sounds. Their vast repertoire spans from the rural, folkloric style of Béla Bartók to the urbane wit of Jean Françaix. Highlighting works ranging from the English Pastoralism of Rebecca Clarke’s duo for clarinet and viola to the joyful eclecticism of Karim Al-Zand’s Stomping Grounds, which draws its inspiration from such diverse sources as Baroque ground bass, music of the African “thumb piano,” and “stop time” jazz, this program delivers a generous helping of assorted delights.
