Mariachi Garibaldi de Jaime Cuéllar and Ballet Folklorico del Rio Grande invite you to join in a celebration of life with lively music and dance, beautiful costumes, and a virtual altar to those we have lost. 

An homage to Mexico’s rich cultural heritage, this show blends graceful traditional dance with vibrant storytelling that also tips a hat to the great Mexican singers of yesteryear such as Vicente Fernandez, Pedro Infante, Lucha Villa, and more. 

ETERNAMENTE: A Día de los Muertos Spectacular!

Seamlessly blending illusion, acrobatics, magic, and whimsy, MOMIX sends audiences flying down the rabbit hole in Moses Pendleton’s newest creation, ALICE, inspired by Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice in Wonderland. “I don’t intend to retell the whole Alice story” Pendleton says, “but to use it as a taking off point for invention.” 

Join this dazzling company on a mind-bending adventure, as Alice encounters time-honored characters including the undulating Caterpillar, a lobster quadrille, frenzied White Rabbits, a mad Queen of Hearts, and a variety of other surprises. Filled with visual splendor and startling creative movement, ALICE reveals that nothing in MOMIX’s world is as it seems!

In the spirit of this celestial guide, the Spring Dance Concert brings together 100 talented dancers from across Cal Poly to present a performance that reflects the diversity and unity of its cast. The concert showcases a variety of dance styles, including modern, contemporary, jazz, and tap, allowing dancers to explore and express their artistic visions.

**A Student-Driven Performance**

True to Cal Poly's "Learn by Doing" philosophy, Polaris is a student-driven endeavor from start to finish. The concert is entirely directed, choreographed, and performed by students, offering them a unique opportunity to showcase their talents, creativity, and leadership skills. This year's artistic team includes student directors Dana Craighead, Carly Morris, and Chloe Rosero, along with a talented group of student choreographers who have worked tirelessly to bring their visions to life on stage.

**Orchesis: Retrograde Winter 2024**

Join us for a mesmerizing journey through dance as the Cal Poly Orchesis Dance Company proudly presents its 54th annual dance concert, "Retrograde." This captivating event is set to take place on January 19-20 & 25-27, 2024, at the Spanos Theatre, Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.

Quintessence Spring 2023 - Theatre & Dance Department at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo

This spring, the Theatre & Dance Department at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, proudly presents "Quintessence," a captivating dance concert that showcases the talent and diversity of its student body. Bringing together 100 dancers from across the university, "Quintessence" is a testament to the unity and variety found within the Cal Poly community.

The performance is a celebration of dance, featuring a wide array of styles including contemporary, modern, jazz, jazz funk, tap, ballet, and ballroom. Each piece is a reflection of the show's title, embodying the pure essence and soul of dance in its most authentic form. Performing works based on the vast repertory of storied choreographer David Parsons, Parsons Dance is an internationally renowned contemporary American dance company known for its energized and athletic ensemble work. Parsons and his Company have been recognized with three Choreography Fellowship Grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the American Choreography Award, the Dance Magazine Award, a Howard Gilman Fellowship, the Dance Masters of America Annual Award, and the Capezio ACE Award. Under the direction of its legendary founder and choreographer, Amalia Hernández, Ballet Folklórico de México and its 60 stellar performers return to the Performing Arts Center direct from Mexico City’s Palacio de Bellas Artes. The company draws upon pre-Hispanic rituals as well as Mexican history and folklore to create an inspiring evening of world music and dance. Driven by the “tap-like” percussion of the dancers’ feet, the swirling patterns of the colorful costumes, and a joyful eruption of music, Ballet Folklórico de México is globally hailed as the original and best Mexican folk dance ensemble.

Ailey II is universally renowned for merging the spirit and energy of the country’s best young dance talent with the passion and creative vision of today’s most outstanding emerging choreographers. Founded in 1974, the awe-inspiring company embodies Alvin Ailey’s pioneering mission to establish an extended cultural community that provides dance performances, training, and community programs for all people. Their Miossi Hall concert will feature Robert Battle’s THE HUNT (2001), an excerpt from ALLELUIA (2002), SEARCHLIGHT (2021), Yannick Lebrun’s SAA MAGNI (2019), William Forsythe’s ENEMY IN THE FIGURE (1989), and Alvin Ailey’s REVELATIONS (1960).
