Adapted from Valdez’s landmark stage production, Zoot Suit brings to life the story of Henry Reyna and the 1942 Sleepy Lagoon case, set against the backdrop of the Zoot Suit Riots in Los Angeles. Blending stylized storytelling, music, and myth, the film remains a defining work of Chicano cinema, exploring identity, injustice, and the power of cultural expression.

Described as your “favorite group chat come to life,” the weekly podcast, hosted by audio-journalist Sam Sanders, poet Saeed Jones, and theater producer Zach Stafford, takes on the news and culture of the day from a Black queer perspective. Rachael Price (vocalist for Lake Street Dive) and Vilray Bolles (Brooklyn-based guitarist and songwriter) conjure 1930s and ’40s swing as Rachael & Vilray. The jazz duo weaves enchanting spells with timeless songs of passion and whimsy that evoke the era of Fats Waller, Peggy Lee, and Johnny Mercer with a wink of modern wit. “She can sing anything; he can play anything … Tin Pan Alley meets the Lower East Side in a smoky bar, in songs with a twist of humor” (NPR). Poet and community activist Faith Santilla leads a soulful and empowering celebration of music and culture inspired by the solidarity formed between Filipino and Mexican workers during the California labor movement of the 1960s. Headlining the evening is Joe Bataan, the iconic “King of Latin Soul.” Born and raised in Spanish Harlem to Filipino and African American parents, Joe Bataan became the “King of Latin Soul” by embodying cross-cultural connections: He can be a street-tough worker one moment and a humble romantic the next. His distinctive fusion of soul, Latin boogaloo, and R&B has been the soundtrack for generations.

Since bursting onto the music scene in 2019, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram “has already made his mark as one of the best, and undoubtedly most exciting, blues guitarists in the world” (Guitar World). Compared to B.B. King, Jimi Hendrix, and Prince by Rolling Stone, Ingram’s jaw-dropping guitar playing and reach-out-and-grab-you-by-the-collar vocals have solidified him as the defining blues voice of his generation. “Ingram plays guitar with dramatic, searing tone and sure-handed authority. And that’s just in the studio,” said NPR Music—he’s even better live. To see the young singer-songwriter in person—performing fan favorites like “Out of This Town,” “Been Here Before,” and “662”—is to witness the creation of musical magic in real time.

Death is not the end; it’s just the beginning. So goes the central thought of Hasta la Muerte, the new program from Las Cafeteras, whose “urgent, relevant music” (BBC) takes in influences from the worlds of punk, hip-hop, beat music, cumbia, and rock. Across two acts, the LA group follows the journey of La Catrina (patron saint of the dead), who encounters folkloric Mexican characters like La Llorona and La Bruja as well as modern-day migrants and families in despair. Through mesmerizing choreography and a mix of original and traditional songs, it’s a moving invitation to travel through time, rhythm, and memory—and a reminder that when we celebrate life, we celebrate love.

Ali Sethi blends traditional South Asian melodies with global beats, fusing traditional qawwali, ghazals, and modern influences. The New York-based artist’s 2022 single “Pasoori” with Shae Gill topped Spotify’s Global Viral chart and was declared Google’s most hum-to-search song of the year. Mixing a traditional raga with reggaeton into what Sethi calls “ragaton,” “Pasoori” carries a message love and joy that crosses cultural boundaries and musical styles. Sethi followed that hit up with his 2023 Intiha, a collaboration with Nicolás Jaar that Pitchfork praised for its songs “rooted in classic Sufi poetry with electronic abstraction [that] blur lines between cultures and eras in a moving tribute to the multiplicity of identity.”

As Perfume Genius, Mike Hadreas has made romantic and curious music that explores the intimacies, challenges, and joys of queer life. His feel for the texture of human relations, and his ability to articulate a lifetime of connection in a handful of words has made him a Grammy nominee and an icon of the queer underground music scene. On his latest album, Glory, he writes from a new vantage point, on the other side of struggle, with sweetness, menace, and comedy. Writer Daniel Felsenthal calls it “a collection of new standards for gay romantics and old souls adrift in the 21st century,” Pitchfork hailed the “detailed, moody technicolor he’s mastered,” and The Guardian called him the “consummate chronicler of 21st-century sensuality.” Along with his band, he brings Glory to the stage for his Ford debut.

From playing coffee shops in Chapel Hill, NC, to selling out legendary venues like Red Rocks and the Ryman Auditorium, Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz have earned a reputation for creating music that encompasses the unknowable mysteries, existential heartbreak, and communal joys of modern life. Since changing their band name from Mandolin Orange—which, for many, was synonymous with North Carolina music—to Watchhouse in 2021, the folk duo say they’re experiencing a “clean re-entry into the world.”

As a guitarist and producer, Mills has worked with an incredible range of artists, including Fiona Apple, Bob Dylan, Feist, Weyes Blood, Sky Ferreira, Perfume Genius, John Legend, and Alabama Shakes, whose Sound & Color earned him a Producer of the Year Grammy nomination. Pino Palladino, meanwhile, has played bass for D’Angelo, Nine Inch Nails, John Mayer, Adele, Erykah Badu, Harry Styles, and Beyoncé. On their 2021 album Notes with Attachments, these two musicians who have spent their careers helping other artists realize their vision spun up something magical of their own. It’s a gauzy and welcoming collection of instrumentals rooted in jazz, soul, and R&B, full of curious experiments and warm with good cheer. Mojo called it “limber, spacey music, pitched somewhere between jazz, funk, and ambience,” while Pitchfork said, “It’s the sound of consummate collaborators imagining a world where there’s no such thing as a lead performer.”

Cumbiatón LA is back for its third annual Noche de Cumbia at The Ford. The program offers a musical and visual exploration—featuring live-drawing of hypnotic visuals by Argentinian illustrator Dr. Alderete—of the evolution of the beloved Afro-Indigenous genre we know as cumbia. This year’s celebration is in honor of Mexican Independence Day, featuring Sonido Gallo Negro, a Mexican band that recaptures the roots of tropical psychedelic music directly from CDMX, and Boyle Heights’ very own É Arenas, a founding member and bassist/guitarist/vocalist of Chicano Batman.

The Australian singer and musician Jessica Newham has spent the last decade-plus finding new ways to fearlessly express themselves as an artist. A trained classical cellist, Newham said she was playing Aida in the opera pit wishing to be onstage. Formed in 1987 out of a pub in Buenos Aires, Los Cafres have led a long, celebrated career as one of the first Spanish-language bands to make it big in the roots-reggae world. With 15 albums and nearly 40 years together, the band behind hits like “Tus Ojos,” "Bastará,” and "Casi q’ me pierdo” make a highly anticipated appearance in LA.

Guster with the LA Phil

The late James Dewitt Yancey—better known as J Dilla—was one of the most celebrated and influential record producers of all time. Before his passing in 2006, he created beats for A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Janet Jackson, the Roots, D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, Ghostface Killah, Common, and pretty much any other rapper looking for a rich, soulful sound. From his earliest days as a member of Slum Village through his essential solo collection Donuts, Dilla treated hip-hop production like jazz: developing swinging rhythms, embracing imperfection, and letting his samples speak to one another. Kevin “DJ Battlecat” Gilliam, also a legendary producer (Snoop Dogg, Tupac Shakur, The Game, Faith Evans, Tha Eastsidaz) and architect of West Coast hip-hop, brings together special guests to celebrate what would have been Dilla’s 50th birthday with live jazz and hip-hop recreations of some of his most iconic beats.

Award-winning Colombian Canadian artist Lido Pimienta transforms The Ford with an immersive live performance centered around her groundbreaking new album La Belleza. In 2023, Paris Paloma’s feminist rallying cry “Labour” blew up on TikTok. Comparisons to female powerhouse vocalists such as Florence Welsh and Kate Bush followed, along with her 2024 album Cacophony, a “debut [that] swings big, tackling themes of death and patriarchal oppression through earthy imagery and dense alt-pop arrangements” (Pitchfork). She’s since opened for Florence + The Machine on the Everybody Scream tour and released the single “Miyazaki,” which takes on both AI and climate change with Paloma’s trademark blend of nuanced social consciousness and anthemic songwriting.
