Complement your subscription with our Symphony Series Companion Course! Director of Education & Community Engagement Walter Bitner leads this deep dive into the music of our 2022-23 Symphony Series. Each class in this unique companion course will focus on the repertoire of the Symphony’s next Symphony Series concert and feature a special guest with a critical role in the performance. Guests will include Music Director Valentina Peleggi, Associate Conductor Chia-Hsuan Lin, and many more! Through recordings, images, scholarship, biographies, backstage stories, and discussion we will listen and engage more deeply with the music and the artists who bring it to life. Classes are at 7pm on a Monday before the concert. Each class is 60-75 Minutes long and will take place on Zoom. A Zoom link will be emailed to you the morning of the class.

Your Richmond Symphony presents Brahms’ lyrical Symphony No. 2, the world premiere of a new work by our composer in residence Damien Geter, and Francesca Dego as the soloist in the Violin Concerto of Ferruccio Busoni. No less a romantic than Brahms, who echoes throughout this concerto, Busoni was a singular voice, an iconoclast who composed music for the future. This is one of the most beloved, most passionate Piano Concertos in the entire repertoire. Alexandra Dariescu plays Grieg’s popular Piano Concerto. “Her fingers seem to be floating over the keys,” raved the Houston Chronicle. “She took total command.” Valentina Peleggi conducts Prokofiev’s intoxicating, impassioned Romeo and Juliet, plus Preludio sinfonico by the 18-year-old Giacomo Puccini, music that would wait a century to be discovered!

In 1934, William Dawson imagined a symphony that would fuse African rhythms and American laments into the symphonic form. What Dvořák’s “New World” Symphony promised, Dawson delivered. His defiant, triumphant “Negro Folk Symphony” is the greatest symphony you’ve never heard, premiered by no less than Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra to thunderous acclaim. Also, the world premiere of Adolphus Hailstork’s 2nd Piano Concerto “The Peaceable Kingdom”, written for Lara Downes. And Chia-Hsuan Lin joins Valentina Peleggi for a two-conductor meditation by Roxanna Panufnik.

In a powerful co-presentation between the Richmond Symphony and Richmond Ballet the two companies bring Carl Orff’s exhilarating Carmina Burana to the Carpenter Theatre with John Butler’s iconic choreography. Audiences will be transfixed by this immersive experience as the Richmond Symphony Chorus performs “surround sound” in the auditorium. Decades after its creation, Carmina Burana remains a bold and astonishing audience favorite. The show is double billed with a beautiful work by the Ballet’s Associate Artistic Director Ma Cong called Thrive.

From Broadway to Motown to Hollywood, N’Kenge salutes the divas of jazz, opera, pop, and soul. With her astonishing five-octave voice, N’Kenge pays tribute to Billie Holiday, Leontyne Price, Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald, Diana Ross, Whitney Houston, Beyonce, and others. Motown founder Berry Gordy heard N’Kenge and declared her “the most versatile artist I know.”

Celebrate the classics and explore new music with the Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra, conducted by Daniel Myssyk, at their final performance of the 2022-23 season! This high voltage event features the Virginia premiere of Ficciones by Grammy-nominated and Latin Grammy-winning composer Roberto Sierra, featuring internationally-acclaimed electric violinist Tracy Silverman in a special performance, commissioned by the Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra for this concert. The concert also highlights the exceptional talents of cellist Christopher Gilley, winner of the 2022-2023 Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition, in selections from Tchaikovsky’s brilliant Variations on a Rococo Theme, and Gustav Mahler’s heartfelt Blumine, originally intended for the composer’s first symphony.

Then admire man-made wonders with Hailstork’s Sonata da Chiesa, which reflects the composer’s fascination with cathedrals. This free concert ends with Daniel Myssyk conducting the orchestra in Schubert’s unfinished Seventh Symphony.

Today, more than 200 years after his passing, the music of Mozart still speaks to us, moves us, and leaves us breathless.   Valentina Peleggi conducts Mozart’s magnificent Symphony No. 36, the “Linz.”   Plus, two exhilarating musical declarations: from our own time: Damien Geter’s “I Said What I Said”.   And the Chamber Symphony of Shostakovich, arranged from his defiant Third String Quartet.

It was a young, desperate love that inspired Frederic Chopin. Too shy to declare his feelings, he wrote: “I say to my piano what I would like to be saying to you…” Michelle Cann plays Chopin’s heart aching First Piano Concerto. “She displayed her own powerful technique in Chopin,” declared Washington Classical Review.  Tito Muñoz conducts a masterpiece by the tragically short-lived Lili Boulanger, and Sir Edward Elgar’s great and noble “Enigma Variations,” a Victorian Facebook of family and friends. Michelle Cann is the 2022-23 Florence Robertson Givens Guest Artist.

The rhythm beguiles. The melodies seduce. This is the dance that captivates and intoxicates. The eternal tango in a symphonic treatment performed by the Richmond Symphony, as the finest dancers captivate the eye. The Richmond Symphony is joined by the Hector Del Curto Quintet and conducted by Chia-Hsuan Lin.

Our traditional 40-minute introduction to the instruments of the orchestra for elementary school students this year includes Camille Saint-Saëns’ beloved Carnival of the Animals in a performance featuring the young dancers of the School of Richmond Ballet. Meet birds, elephants, pianists, donkeys, kangaroos, and more in this thrilling performance for young listeners.

A concert experience unlike any other. Valentina Peleggi leads the Richmond Symphony, Chorus, and soloists in Mahler’s monumental Symphony Number Two. The awe-inspiring “Resurrection” Symphony is a not-to-be-missed concert event. Music by George Walker begins the program.

Vienna – 1800.  A struggling young composer completes a symphony.  The first of nine that will change the course of music.  And electrify audiences for two centuries. Chia-Husan Lin conducts Beethoven’s First Symphony, Haydn’s last Symphony, and works by two masters of our time – Vivian Fung and James Lee III.

Prepare to be swept away by one of opera’s most tragic love stories.  The tale of the stunning courtesan Violetta and the hopelessly romantic Alfredo is woven with some of the best-known music in the repertoire.  La Traviata’s high points are matched with tears in the tragic end.

The Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra (RSYO) offers a pre-college orchestra experience for the serious student musician. Nearly all members of RSYO study with private instructors and all are leaders in their school programs. RSYO performs masterworks of the orchestral repertoire and, once each season, performs side-by-side with the Richmond Symphony. In RSYO, students hold themselves to a high level of discipline, preparation and musicianship.

When she took the gold at the 2021 Menuhin competition, the audience stood and roared. María Dueñas is already acclaimed as one of the leading virtuosos of her generation. See her play Lalo’s mesmerizing Symphonie espagnole. Also, Valentina Peleggi conducts a new work by young Mexican sound-shaper Juan Pablo Contreras, and Brahms’ haunting Third Symphony.

Enter a world of myth and magic as Prince Ivan, the thirteen princesses, and the Firebird battle the evil sorcerer Koschei. Ma Cong’s one-act Firebird, set to Stravinsky’s triumphant score, will make its East Coast premiere on the Carpenter Theatre stage this February. Featuring powerful choreography and striking costumes, sets, and lighting, Cong’s modern take on this classic folktale is not to be missed.

Gospel and symphony fans unite! Join us this year as The Cultural Arts Center pairs the Tribute Gospel Ensemble and the Richmond Symphony on the Sara Belle November Stage in this popular, annual concert series. The Tribute Gospel Ensemble is a Richmond based Gospel group out of First African Baptist Church, one of the oldest black churches in the region celebrating its 242nd anniversary in 2022. This choir was formed over 20 years ago by its dynamic music director, Ms. Michelle Lightfoot.  Tribute has opened for such talents as: Richard Smallwood; Smokie Norful, and Darryl Coley.
