The icarus Quartet, cofounded by Matt Keown (‘17, Percussion) and faculty artist Jeff Stern (MM ’14, Percussion), opens the Secret Artists Series 2024-25 season with its new Bartok Reborn program, featuring the Bartok Sonata for Two Piano and Percussion and three commissioned pieces by Martin Bresnick, Viet Cuong (BM ’11, MM ’12, Composition), and Pulitzer Prize-winner Jennifer Higdon. The concert takes place September 30 at the Brendle Recital Hall in Winston-Salem, NC, and tickets are available online.

The Baltimore-based ensemble Mind on Fire, co-founded by artistic director Allison Clendaniel (BM ’14, Voice) and executive director James David Young (DMA ’14, Composition), presents the world premiere of and, we, each—the new opera by composer and faculty artist Michael Hersch (BM ’95, MM ’97, Composition) with a libretto by poet Shane McCrae—September 28 and 29 at the Baltimore Theatre Project. The opera stars soprano and faculty artist Ah Young Hong (BM ’98, MM ’01, Voice)  and baritone Jesse Blumberg, is directed by James Matthew Daniel, and conductor Tito Muñoz leads an ensemble of Emi Ferguson (flute), Gleb Kanasevich (clarinet), Andy Hudson (clarinet), Adda Kridler (violin), Leah Asher (viola), Coleman Itzkoff (cello). Mind on Fire also presents and, we, each at the Hopkins Bloomberg Center October 13 and National Sawdust in Brooklyn February 6, 2025.

Polyaspora Festival: The Future is Now II

With the support of a generous grant from the Nexus Awards, Dr. Felipe Lara, Pulitzer Prize Finalist for 2024 and Associate Professor and Chair of Composition at The Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, will lead Polyaspora, a five-day contemporary music festival, at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg Center in Washington, D.C. in fall 2024. Hosted by the Peabody Institute and curated by Professor Lara and George Lewis of Columbia University, Polyaspora centers Black and Brazilian perspectives in contemporary music alongside a showcase of new musical works by Peabody Conservatory students. The globally renowned and New York City-based International Contemporary Ensemble will serve as guest performers and educators for the festival. The festival includes three concerts with pre-concert talks at the Hopkins Bloomberg Center’s state-of-the-art Theatre, and one concert on the Peabody Institute’s Baltimore campus. All four concerts will be free and open to the public. Additional workshops and open rehearsals at Peabody will be open to JHU and Peabody students to attend and participate in.

Giuseppe Verdi was possibly the most important and influential composer of Italian opera of the mid to late 19th century. He was always appreciative of great writers and playwrights. His favorite was William Shakespeare. Verdi set three of Shakespeare’s plays into opera. The first was Macbeth (1847), the second Otello (1887) and the work of “old age” Falstaff (1893). This course will examine these great works and Verdi’s collaboration with his librettists and more. Historic and current examples of recordings and videos clips will be played.
