Julius Caesar and Cleopatra are one of the most famous love couples in human history. It's no wonder, then, that artists from all disciplines—from art to theater to film—have been inspired by the passionate relationship between the Roman general and the Egyptian pharaoh. The most impressive musical interpretation was achieved 300 years ago by George Frideric Handel in his opera "Giulio Cesare in Egitto," which, with its rich instrumentation and numerous musical ideas, remains one of the milestones of Baroque heroic opera. Now, the work will be performed for the first time in concert at the Elbphilharmonie with a prominent cast.

Italian cellist and composer Giovanni Sollima is a classical music artist with rock star status – he is often called the Jimi Hendrix of classical music. He will visit the Liepāja Concert Hall with a program where we will vividly feel the atmosphere of Venice – a mosaic city where different cultures have merged since ancient times. Giovanni Sollima will perform in Liepāja with masters of the historical repertoire – the Italian orchestra Il Pomo d'Oro, who have gained world-class recognition and whose playing is characterized by extraordinary artistry, relief articulation and golden southern radiance.

From the expansive musical mind of Joyce DiDonato comes Eden, the renowned mezzo-soprano’s latest project exploring the majesty, might, and mystery of the natural world. As in her well-received Cal Performances program In War & Peace: Harmony Through Music, DiDonato is joined by longtime partners, the early-music ensemble Il Pomo d’Oro. The theatrical, semi-staged concert features music from the 17th to 21st centuries by Handel, Gluck, Cavalli, Wagner, Mahler, Ives, and Copland. Oscar-winning British composer Rachel Portman composes a new work specially for the project, setting a text by American poet Gene Scheer for The First Morning of the World. “Joyce sings and the world is suddenly brighter.
