Fargo-Moorhead Opera

Fargo, ND, United States

The Fargo Moorhead Opera's Gate City Bank Young Artist Program is a distinguished initiative established in 2013 with the primary objective of fostering the development of young opera artists. The program is designed to provide comprehensive training and valuable stage experience, thereby enhancing the performance skills of emerging singers as they progress in their careers. Located in Fargo, North Dakota, USA, the Young Artist Program operates from early February to mid-April each year. It is recognized as the first program of its kind in the region and has been instrumental in bringing together groups of young professionals to Fargo. The participants, known as Young Artists, are involved in a variety of activities during their tenure with the Fargo Moorhead Opera (FM Opera). The Young Artists are given the opportunity to perform at local schools and community events, and they play a significant role in FM Opera productions. For the 2023-2024 season, they are set to take on lead roles in their own production of Michael Ching’s "Speed Dating Tonight" as well as perform in Giacomo Puccini’s "Turandot." The program offers a robust curriculum that includes coaching in standard operatic repertoire, with each Young Artist expected to learn at least one major role in its entirety. Career training seminars cover essential topics such as audition techniques, vocal wellness, marketing, diction, and acting. Additionally, Young Artists may cover leading roles or be considered for comprimario roles in mainstage productions, and they participate in staged scene concerts. As community ambassadors for the opera, the Young Artists engage in outreach programs within regional schools and at various area businesses and community organizations. They also benefit from masterclasses with visiting guest artists and the FM Opera General Director. The Gate City Bank Young Artist Program is generously funded by Gate City Bank, with additional support from the Twin Cities Opera Guild and Anda Properties. The program provides its artists with a weekly stipend, housing, and a transportation allowance for the duration of their involvement. Alumni of the program have praised its impact on their development as professional singers. Hilary Ginther, a participant from the inaugural year, commended the program for its professional treatment of the artists and the supportive environment that facilitated artistic growth. Kyle Tomlin, another alumnus from 2014, highlighted the program's role in skill-building and the opportunity to work with industry professionals. Overall, the Gate City Bank Young Artist Program at the Fargo Moorhead Opera stands as a testament to the organization's commitment to nurturing the next generation of opera talent, ensuring a vibrant future for the art form.
