Rochester’s City magazine calls the SUNY Brockport dance faculty some of the “top names” in the field. What they bring to their choreography, presented in these concerts, cannot be underestimated.

There are eight million stories in the Naked City, and this is one of them. Well, four of them. In the sung-through Ordinary Days, four New York City residents try to find happiness, inspiration, love, and hope within themselves, each other, and in the world around them.

Inspiration can strike in unexpected ways. A piece of music, a vision in the choreographer’s head, current events… such are the muses that have struck our student dance-makers in the past. What will stimulate our students’ imaginations for these concerts?

DANCE/Hartwell

Take a journey to Greece via its long and strong musical heritage. Steve Tavelaris and Nick Mouganis create a diverse Greek musical experience, carefully merging traditional musicianship with modern technology. Opa!

Aegean Duo

The 10-minute play is a favorite exercise of playwrights. The plays are audience favorites, too. Here at SUNY Brockport, audiences can see fully realized productions that can run the gamut from dramas that tug at the heartstrings to comedies that make you double over with laughter.

Festival of Ten XIV

John Dady, a member of the Rochester Music Hall of Fame, has a vast repertoire of songs including original compositions, Irish and American Folk songs, popular tunes from the Big Band Era to the Beatles. He will also share music about the Erie Canal, which will be celebrating its bicentennial in 2025.

Harmony. Isn’t that what life should be about? The harmonies of the Chorus are a perfect finale for this year’s Fine Arts Series.

Brockport University-Community Chorus

Jason Robert Brown’s Songs for a New World is a song cycle featuring a variety of characters in a variety of locales, from a Spanish galleon in 1492 to a contemporary New York penthouse apartment. The characters (including Mrs. Santa Claus) are each facing a personal dilemma – a “moment of decision,” according to the composer – and reflect about life, love, and making choices.

Celebrating all things African, artistic director Jenise Akilah Anthony and musical director Mohamed Diaby mesh movement and music together to produce a rollicking, rhythmic event that bursts off the stage to enthrall every audience member. Sankofa’s guest artists only add to the international flair of the concerts.

With the audience surrounding their dances on three sides, student choreographers are excited to create adjudicated pieces for such a palpable and personal setting. Join in the post-concert talk following the Friday evening performance.

Hartwell Hall

Grace Browning (harp) and Benjamin Krug (cello)—a husband and wife team of Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra musicians—present a program of unique duo arrangements, including works by Tchaikovsky and Dvořák, as well as a premiere of Schubert’s beloved “Arpeggione Sonata” arranged for cello and harp. This interactive recital of multi-genre works provides new insights into this unique collaboration as well as the beautiful inner workings of partners in music and in life.

Society for Chamber Music in Rochester presents The Browning/Krug Duo

In this Tony Award® and Pulitzer Prize-winning play, a brilliant mathematician passes away after a long bout of mental illness. His daughter, a mathematician in her own right, teeters between genius and madness herself. Her sister and a student of the father’s arrive for the funeral, but what is it they are all after? Is it to determine, once and for all, who authored an extremely complicated mathematical proof? Can one prove their love and devotion, while also proving one’s brilliance?

The power of dance speaks volumes with just a gesture. These breathtaking and inspirational student works are the culmination of months of studio work, embodying intensive immersion in the creative process.

A spooky Friday the 13th awaits you when the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra makes a rare visit to the Brockport campus. Featured on the program will be selections by Gounod, Grieg, Liszt, and Prokofiev, along with music from Spiderman, Coco, Harry Potter, and—in a celestial/Eclipse-setting mood—“Also Sprach Zarathustra” aka the theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra

With a clock hovering above them and the audience choosing the order, the acting company is challenged to perform 30 plays within the allotted 60 minutes. The plays, as short as they are, cover a wide range of topics, from serious to absurd. It’s interactive and mind- and time-bending and a whole lot of fun. Not to mention the pressure for the actors to beat the clock!

Saxophonist John Viavattine has been a fixture of the Rochester music scene for more than 30 years. For many of those years, Viavattine was the director of bands at Spencerport High School. He is a member of The Mambo Kings and has played with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Chuck and Gap Mangione, and accompanied such singers as Aretha Franklin, Vic Damone, and Lou Rawls.Richard DeLaney, of The Mambo Kings, and several of Viavattine’s former students will join him on stage.Friday, September

Big Blue House is a trio of seasoned musicians with experience in a variety of genres, merging styles and voices into a unique gumbo of folk, rock, blues, jazz and reggae. They offer a blend of voices, acoustic rhythm and lead guitar, and stand-up bass.

Dance is a three-dimensional artform. The Strasser Studio provides a unique perspective for the audience, which can view the dancers in three dimensions from three different sides.

The President has used an unprintable word to describe the First Lady. Life would be simpler if that were the only situation setting his staff in action. But, no, there’s more. So. Much. More. And the talented, tightly wound, tempestuous women who supposedly have his back have their jobs cut out for them in order to save his presidency in this rollicking comedy.
