Dean of the Bard College Conservatory of Music and UNESCO Global Goodwill Ambassador, Tan Dun, has made an indelible mark on the world’s music scene with a repertoire that spans the boundaries of classical music, multimedia performance, and Eastern and Western traditions.  On May 11, Tan Dun conducts the Conservatory Orchestra.

Writing music that straddles Chinese and Western traditions, Tan Dun  is a boundary-breaking artist of limitless imagination and inclusivity,  conjuring a soundscape that makes use of everything from ancient relics to smartphones. This first American performance of Five Muses of Dunhuang brings to life forgotten instruments painted centuries ago on devotional murals in Chinese caves. As a conductor, Tan has unique insights into another perceptive witness and recreator of human ritual, Stravinsky, especially in this rarely heard transcription from a Chinese-themed opera. Stravinsky, with his keen ear for real-life rituals, leans into the real splashy Fireworks and Chinese-themed opera transcription.

Composer Carl Orff based Carmina Burana on two dozen poems – but far from odes of love, these verses deal in lust, gambling, drinking, and the fickle hand of fate (“O Fortuna!”). Music Director Ken-David Masur joins Artistic Partner Dashon Burton and the Milwaukee Symphony Chorus as they lend their voices to this bawdy cantata. Pairing well with Orff’s epic is Carlos Simon’s Fate Now Conquers, which refers to a notebook entry written by Beethoven and explores “the unpredictable ways of fate.” Between these, the MSO showcases its own Principal Trombone Megumi Kanda in Tan Dun’s Three Muses in Video Game, a daring and spiritual concerto which challenges the trombonist to evoke three ancient Chinese musical instruments.

With its captivating scenery and gripping martial arts sequences, Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon tells the story of a 19th-century warrior (Chow Yun-Fat) who gives his sword to his secret love (Michelle Yeoh) for safekeeping. Watch the adventure and romance unfold as the CSO performs Tan Dun’s enchanting, Oscar-winning score.

French favorites meet new wonders, led by guest conductor Sunny Xia! While all three French works were written within a decade in the late 19th century, only two⁠—Debussy’s Petite Suite and Fauré’s Pélleas et Mélisande⁠—entered the repertoire. It took more than another century for the music of Augusta Holmès to be discovered, including the lush La nuit et l’amour, an interlude from her larger work inspired by the work of French painter Puvis de Chavannes. Jessie Montgomery’s Starburst, commissioned by the Sphinx Organization for its Virtuosi, sparkles like the formation of the astronomical phenomenon itself.
