For all the ardour and visionary zeal that so often permeates Schumann’s big-boned Fantasie and Chopin’s piano sonata swansong, nostalgia isn’t entirely held at bay. Three elegantly-coutured pieces by Cécile Chaminade establish a mood that is compounded by Hough’s Sonatina Nostalgica, an affectionate essay probing the potency of whimsy, reminiscence, and belonging.

Join us for an unforgettable evening at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, featuring the extraordinary talents of Sir Stephen Hough. This special event, titled "An Evening with Sir Stephen Hough," marks the CMS debut of one of the most celebrated musicians of our time, both as a pianist and a composer. The performance is scheduled for Sunday, November 24, 2024, at 5:00 pm, taking place in the prestigious Alice Tully Hall. The concert will last approximately 2 hours, including an intermission.

Sir Stephen Hough, renowned for his distinctive artistry, will present a unique program that showcases his exceptional skills and creative vision. The evening will include Liszt’s fearsomely virtuosic sonata alongside works by Chopin and the prolific Cecile Chaminade. Highlighting the event will be the world premiere of Sir Stephen Hough's Piano Quintet, performed in collaboration with the enthralling Viano Quartet.

Sir Stephen Hough, a recipient of numerous awards and honors, including a MacArthur Fellowship and a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), is celebrated not only for his performances but also for his contributions as a composer and writer. The Viano Quartet, joining him for this premiere, is praised for their virtuosity and unity of intention, making this collaboration a must-see for chamber music enthusiasts.

The universally admired Swedish artist received the Female Singer of the Year Award at the International Opera Awards in 2018, the same year that she was awarded the title of Court Singer by Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. Her operatic roles – many of them performed at the Royal Opera House in London or at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, as well as in Sweden and elsewhere – run from Mozart to Puccini, Richard Strauss and Janáček. Her widely ranging programme explores songs from the French, German (or in Weill’s case from his post-German period) and Swedish traditions.

Exciting young Metropolitan Opera soprano Erika Baikoff returns to Music@Menlo to explore the broad, colorful art of French songs. José Silvestre de los Dolores White (1835-1918), also known as José White and Joseph White, was born in Matanzas, Cuba, during colonial times. He began playing the violin and composing at a young age. His professional debut occurred in 1854 alongside the American pianist Louis Moreau Gottschalk (1829-1869), who inspired him to study at the Paris Conservatoire. There, he won the Premier Prix after less than one year of study. White gained global recognition as a soloist, composer, and pedagogue and, in the United States, he notably became the first soloist of African descent to perform with the New York Philharmonic Society, during his 1875-1876 tour.

Following her Royal Opera House debut in Andrea Chénier conducted by Antonio Pappano, mezzo-soprano Katia Ledoux joins pianist Anna Tilbrook for a recital presented by Opera Rara and the Temple Music Foundation. Taking place within the Inner Temple Parliament Chamber, the programme centres on the Parisian salons of the 19th century. Featuring newly-restored, rarely – if ever – performed songs by Donizetti from his years in Paris, the programme is completed with selections by Donizetti’s contemporaries. Including several songs composed by women, Ledoux and Tilbrook recreate the experience of a musical soirée.

We have so much to celebrate this season - The BI Database reaching its one-year anniversary, Women’s History Month, Our 6th-annual WoCo fest coming up in April, but most of all the 40th Birthday of our Co-Founder, Artistic and Executive Director, Dr. Laura Colgate.

This concert, performed by our two co-founders, will be a festive occasion to celebrate all that BI has done so far and look forward to all of the exciting things to come. The program will include works for violin and organ by Alexandra Gardner, Lili Boulanger, Amy Beach, Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre, Florence Price, Isabella Leonarda, and more! Formed in 2022, TRIO SEOUL’s founding members, violinist Jinjoo Cho, Cellist Brannon Cho, and Pianist Kyu Yeon Kim, are winners and laureates of more than 20 international competitions and awards combined. The ensemble was formed with a mission to combine forces between three members who all identify as the 21st-century musician, actively performing in the world’s greatest concert halls while presenting creative projects in collaboration with artists of various fields, including composers, choreographers, writers, and visual artists. The city of Seoul is a dynamic symbol of the ensemble’s cultural roots as well as artistic intensity.

The Ross Trio have been playing chamber music together for almost their whole musical lives and are delighted to collaborate in this concert with another dear childhood friend, soprano Felicity Davies. Something magical happens when a singer performs with a handful of instrumentalists. They will explore the interplay of music, dance and poetry spanning three centuries, from the romance of Clara Schumann to the equally enchanting sounds of the 21st century, including a world premiere performance of a setting of a Mary Oliver poem for reed trio and voice, written specially for these musicians.

At a time when women weren’t typically considered composer material, Louise Farrenc and Cécile Chaminade triumphed against all odds. Farrenc’s Symphony recalls Brahms or Mendelssohn with a French touch, while Chaminade’s Concertino and Poulenc’s Sonata highlight the versatile flute playing of soloist in residence Emmanuel Pahud, one of the greatest virtuosos playing today. A young Debussy pays homage to the great French composers of his time.

A French soirée! The program opens with Lili Boulanger’s D’un Soir Triste (Of a Sad Evening) and is followed by internationally-acclaimed pianist Mark Markham performing Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand. After intermission, Markham joins LSO again to perform Cécile Chaminade’s vivacious Concertstück for Piano and Orchestra. The program closes with Debussy’s masterpiece, La Mer.

Great Artists Series '25: Sir Stephen Hough, piano

Jeremy Denk is one of America’s foremost pianists. Winner of a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship and the Avery Fisher Prize, Denk was recently elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Denk returns frequently to Carnegie Hall and in recent seasons has appeared with the Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, and Cleveland Orchestra, as well as on tour with Academy St. Martin in the Fields, and at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the BBC Proms. Denk is also known for his original and insightful writing on music, which Alex Ross praises for its “arresting sensitivity and wit.” His New York Times bestselling memoir, Every Good Boy Does Fine was published to universal acclaim by Random House in 2022.

The stage is set for our favourite organist, who is also in great demand on the international scene: In the last organ concert of this season, Christian Schmitt will play our large concert hall organ – accompanied by our solo flutist Daniela Koch and our deputy solo violist Branko Kabadaić. The concert begins with a fascinating etude for organ pedal, which Christian Schmitt premièred in Zurich in 2023 – and about which the composer Maximilian Schnaus writes: »The musical idea illuminates the peripheral areas of the organ sound and the peripheral areas of our perception.« Liszt studied Bach’s organ works and passions intensively, particularly during his time in Weimar – and his affection for this Baroque master found intimate expression in the Andante »Aus tiefer Not«, written in 1859. Paul Hindemith wrote this touching funeral music on a concert tour in London on 21 January 1936 within a few hours after King George V had died there on the previous day. Bach’s masterful Sonata in G major captivates with its skilful interweaving of voices between the two instruments. For César Franck, it was clear: »Mon orgue? – C'est un orchestre!« And that is exactly how his magnificent musical creations sound – including the »Grande pièce symphonique«, completed in 1862, which even bears the required orchestral gesture in its title. Tōru Takemitsu, the cosmopolitan and influential composer from Japan, created an almost revolutionary work in 1971 with his flute piece »Voice« – because the human voice is included here in an interesting way. To wrap things up, the concertino by Cécile Chaminade, written in 1902, impresses with its breathtaking virtuosity, passionate gestures, shimmering harmonies and yearning melodies.

Sir Stephen is always described as a polymath. Indeed, the Englishman is a painter; author of novels, essays, and an autobiography of his musical youth; composer - we have heard his string quartet twice in CMNV concerts; and of course, a pianist. This will be his third appearance in Napa; his first for a solo recital. He plays almost everything, as his 60+ recordings attest. This program reflects his interest in both the pinnacles of the piano literature - Liszt and Chopin, and the nearly-lost wonders of the French late romantic composer Cecile Chaminade, a childhood fascination of Hough's.
