Marielle Murphy, a native of Carmel, California, is establishing an exciting career as coloratura soprano on opera and concert stages in the United States and Europe, in traditional as well as highly innovative productions. She made her European debut at the Salzburg Festival in Massenet’s Thaïs with Plàcido Domingo and the Munich Radio Orchestra, and numerous engagements in European opera houses quickly followed. Marielle made her debut at New York's Metropolitan Opera in the 2023/24 season as Oscar in Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera and returned to the Met in the 2024/25 season in Richard Strauss’ Die Frau ohne Schatten. For several years she has been based in Münster, Germany, where she is a leading soloist in the opera ensemble of the Theater Münster.

Marielle is accompanied by pianist Alden Gatt, assistant conductor of the Frankfurt Opera and performer at major venues around the world.

Romanticism: an era of peace, technological development and the rise of the middle class. But also of the impoverished lower classes, the filth of industrialization and colonialism. Movements such as Impressionism prepared the way for a new musical era. The pianist Joseph Moog (“without doubt one of the most brilliant pianists”, Gramophone 2015), who can also be heard as a soloist in the 6th Symphony Concert, takes us into this exciting, sonically dazzling time of upheaval with his program “Belle Epoque”.

Sir Stephen is always described as a polymath. Indeed, the Englishman is a painter; author of novels, essays, and an autobiography of his musical youth; composer - we have heard his string quartet twice in CMNV concerts; and of course, a pianist. This will be his third appearance in Napa; his first for a solo recital. He plays almost everything, as his 60+ recordings attest. This program reflects his interest in both the pinnacles of the piano literature - Liszt and Chopin, and the nearly-lost wonders of the French late romantic composer Cecile Chaminade, a childhood fascination of Hough's.

The stage is set for our favourite organist, who is also in great demand on the international scene: In the last organ concert of this season, Christian Schmitt will play our large concert hall organ – accompanied by our solo flutist Daniela Koch and our deputy solo violist Branko Kabadaić. The concert begins with a fascinating etude for organ pedal, which Christian Schmitt premièred in Zurich in 2023 – and about which the composer Maximilian Schnaus writes: »The musical idea illuminates the peripheral areas of the organ sound and the peripheral areas of our perception.« Liszt studied Bach’s organ works and passions intensively, particularly during his time in Weimar – and his affection for this Baroque master found intimate expression in the Andante »Aus tiefer Not«, written in 1859. Paul Hindemith wrote this touching funeral music on a concert tour in London on 21 January 1936 within a few hours after King George V had died there on the previous day. Bach’s masterful Sonata in G major captivates with its skilful interweaving of voices between the two instruments. For César Franck, it was clear: »Mon orgue? – C'est un orchestre!« And that is exactly how his magnificent musical creations sound – including the »Grande pièce symphonique«, completed in 1862, which even bears the required orchestral gesture in its title. Tōru Takemitsu, the cosmopolitan and influential composer from Japan, created an almost revolutionary work in 1971 with his flute piece »Voice« – because the human voice is included here in an interesting way. To wrap things up, the concertino by Cécile Chaminade, written in 1902, impresses with its breathtaking virtuosity, passionate gestures, shimmering harmonies and yearning melodies.

Jeremy Denk is one of America’s foremost pianists. Winner of a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship and the Avery Fisher Prize, Denk was recently elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Denk returns frequently to Carnegie Hall and in recent seasons has appeared with the Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, and Cleveland Orchestra, as well as on tour with Academy St. Martin in the Fields, and at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the BBC Proms. The program opens with Lili Boulanger’s D’un Soir Triste (Of a Sad Evening) and is followed by internationally-acclaimed pianist Mark Markham performing Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand. After intermission, Markham joins LSO again to perform Cécile Chaminade’s vivacious Concertstück for Piano and Orchestra. The program closes with Debussy’s masterpiece, La Mer.

The Viano Quartet, joining him for this premiere, is praised for their virtuosity and unity of intention, making this collaboration a must-see for chamber music enthusiasts.

The universally admired Swedish artist received the Female Singer of the Year Award at the International Opera Awards in 2018, the same year that she was awarded the title of Court Singer by Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. José Silvestre de los Dolores White (1835-1918), also known as José White and Joseph White, was born in Matanzas, Cuba, during colonial times. He began playing the violin and composing at a young age. His professional debut occurred in 1854 alongside the American pianist Louis Moreau Gottschalk (1829-1869), who inspired him to study at the Paris Conservatoire. There, he won the Premier Prix after less than one year of study. White gained global recognition as a soloist, composer, and pedagogue and, in the United States, he notably became the first soloist of African descent to perform with the New York Philharmonic Society, during his 1875-1876 tour.

Following her Royal Opera House debut in Andrea Chénier conducted by Antonio Pappano, mezzo-soprano Katia Ledoux joins pianist Anna Tilbrook for a recital presented by Opera Rara and the Temple Music Foundation. Taking place within the Inner Temple Parliament Chamber, the programme centres on the Parisian salons of the 19th century. Featuring newly-restored, rarely – if ever – performed songs by Donizetti from his years in Paris, the programme is completed with selections by Donizetti’s contemporaries. Including several songs composed by women, Ledoux and Tilbrook recreate the experience of a musical soirée.

Formed in 2022, TRIO SEOUL’s founding members, violinist Jinjoo Cho, Cellist Brannon Cho, and Pianist Kyu Yeon Kim, are winners and laureates of more than 20 international competitions and awards combined. The ensemble was formed with a mission to combine forces between three members who all identify as the 21st-century musician, actively performing in the world’s greatest concert halls while presenting creative projects in collaboration with artists of various fields, including composers, choreographers, writers, and visual artists. The Ross Trio have been playing chamber music together for almost their whole musical lives and are delighted to collaborate in this concert with another dear childhood friend, soprano Felicity Davies. Something magical happens when a singer performs with a handful of instrumentalists. They will explore the interplay of music, dance and poetry spanning three centuries, from the romance of Clara Schumann to the equally enchanting sounds of the 21st century, including a world premiere performance of a setting of a Mary Oliver poem for reed trio and voice, written specially for these musicians.

At a time when women weren’t typically considered composer material, Louise Farrenc and Cécile Chaminade triumphed against all odds. Farrenc’s Symphony recalls Brahms or Mendelssohn with a French touch, while Chaminade’s Concertino and Poulenc’s Sonata highlight the versatile flute playing of soloist in residence Emmanuel Pahud, one of the greatest virtuosos playing today. A young Debussy pays homage to the great French composers of his time.

The Sitkovetsky Trio is a well-established and exceptional piano trio, having previously received the BBC Music Magazine’s Chamber Music Award. This  concert starts with a fresh interpretation of works from Max Bruch’s ‘Eight Pieces’, (originally written for piano, viola and clarinet), that allows each of the trio’s soloist talents to shine through in turn. The concert’s a rare opportunity to hear music by French composer Cècile Chaminade. In 1913, she was awarded the Légion d’Honneur, a first for a female composer. Her Piano Trio No. 2 in A min is a work filled with gorgeous and lyrical melodies, as is the concert’s finale work, Brahms’ Piano Trio No. 2 in C Major.

Pianist Jeremy Denk’s programming evokes a sense of “poetic logic” (Boston Classical Review) that has captivated PCMS audiences for decades. For this season’s appearance, Denk illuminates works by nine female composers from past and present.

A note from the Maestro: As winter comes to a close in Maine we may see crocuses peeking up through lightly fallen snow, or delicate starflowers growing in our forests, heralding the warming spring weather ahead. With the awakening and blooming of Mother Nature, composers through the ages have embraced spring as a source of inspiration. The ballet, The Rite of Spring, by Stravinsky engages one of the largest orchestras we have ever put on the stage of the Collins Center and this epic work will have us rolling and romping through the rhythmic splendor of springtime. Callirhoë by Chaminade is inspired by Venus, goddess of fertility, and the Spring Afternoon by Boulanger is a sweet short journey into the impressionist style. The robust merrymaking of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Russian Easter Overture kicks off this programmatic celebration of Spring.

Since forming in 2010, Neave Trio – violinist Anna Williams, cellist Mikhail Veselov, and pianist Eri Nakamura – has earned enormous praise for its engaging, cutting­edge performances. WQXR explains, “‘Neave’ is actually a Gaelic name meaning ‘bright’ and ‘radiant,’ both of which certainly apply to this trio's music making.” The group’s 2019 album Her Voice, on Chandos Records, was named one of the best recordings of the year by both The New York Times and BBC Radio 3. The Boston Musical Intelligencer reports, “it is inconceivable that they will not soon be among the busiest chamber ensembles going,” and “their unanimity, communication, variety of touch, and expressive sensibility rate first tier.”
