The unprecedented national consortium ensures that new works by women composers, each commissioned by the League, will be infused in orchestra seasons to come, with multiple performances throughout the country. This platinum anniversary concert highlights The Symphony’s brilliant principal players in Concerto Grosso, American composer Jonathan Leshnoff’s work, previously commissioned for our 60th. Violín soloist and multi-Grammy© nominee Philippe Quint brings his imaginative approach to Mendelssohn’s gorgeous Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64, one of the most prominent and highly regarded works in the concerto repertoire for violín, while Johannes Brahms’ monumental Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68 – which took the composer 21 years of revisions to declare ready for public performance in 1876 – will bring the evening – and our 70th Anniversary Subscription Season – to a triumphant close.

Multi-Grammy-nominated violinist Philippe Quint and members of the world-class, Chicago-based Joffrey Ballet celebrate tango legend Astor Piazzolla in a performance of music and dance.
Lauded by The Times (London) for his “bravura technique and unflagging energy,” Philippe Quint is internationally praised for his unique takes on classical core repertoire, support of contemporary composers and passion for giving new life to neglected works. For this celebration of Argentine composer and virtuoso bandoneón player Astor Piazzolla, Quint collaborates with the renowned Joffrey Ballet, one of the premier ballet companies performing today.
The year 2021 marked the centennial of Astor Piazzolla. The single most important figure in the history of tango, Piazzolla created a whole new musical genre based on Argentina’s national dance. Breaking boundaries and revolutionizing traditional tango, he introduced the world to tango nuevo: a fusion of tango, jazz, klezmer, and classical music. The Piazzolla style is bold, unique, immediately recognizable, and utterly irresistible.
Join us as Philippe Quint and his Quint Quintet are joined by the members of Joffrey Ballet to perform some of Piazzolla’s most iconic works as part of a narrative tracing the musical and personal journey of an extraordinary musician. Come and discover the man whose life story was, in his own words, "one of both angels and demons."

Be it Hollywood’s “Silver Screen” or its majestic mountains, rivers and vast plains, America inspires great music and art! Czech-born composer Antonín Dvořák traveled our bustling urban centers and spacious rural landscapes at the end of the 19th century and wove a beautiful tapestry of American traditional styles with Western European symphonic traditions, leading to the work of Aaron Copland and Joan Tower. John Williams and Erich Korngold took that inspiration and created epic scores that have become the soundtracks of our lives. Violin superstar Elena Urioste takes to the stage with Michael Christie and the New West Symphony for this kaleidoscopic event celebrating America’s musical heritage.
