Following this, the audience will be treated to Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1, performed by the prodigiously talented 21-year-old violinist María Dueñas. Her interpretation promises to be a deeply felt, character-rich performance that showcases her fearless technique and musical storytelling prowess.

The night will conclude with Tchaikovsky's "Romeo and Juliet," a Fantasy Overture that encapsulates the essence of Shakespeare's tragic love story through Tchaikovsky's passionate and genius musical interpretation.

Featuring two of today’s brightest rising stars, this duo concert in our most intimate venue thrills on every level. It’s the recital debut of violinist María Dueñas, who gave a “stupendous” performance here in 2022 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Gustavo Dudamel. “Dueñas was wholly captivating ... she could have drawn blood from [the violin’s] strings,” wrote The New York Times. The piece she performed to such acclaim was a new work by Carnegie Hall’s 2024–2025 Debs Composer’s Chair Gabriela Ortiz, who contributes another new work for this special occasion. On piano is Alexander Malofeev, an extraordinary artist of rapidly increasing international renown, who makes his own recital debut in March 2024.

Join us at the Royal Festival Hall on Sunday, 3rd November 2024, at 3pm for an unforgettable concert experience as María Dueñas, the celebrated violinist and winner of the Menuhin Violin Competition in 2021, takes the stage to perform Sibelius's Violin Concerto. This concert promises to be a deeply expressive and personal journey through one of the violin repertoire's undisputed pinnacles, showcasing Dueñas's exceptional talent and the emotional depth of her performance that has captivated audiences worldwide.

Under the baton of conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali, the program will also feature the UK premiere of "Submarea" by Swedish composer Mats Larsson Gothe, accompanied by an inspiring underwater film of the wild Nordic coast, and Nielsen's Symphony No. 5, a dramatic symphony that explores a battle between the forces of evil and the forces of nature.

This concert is part of the Nordic Soundscapes series, offering a unique exploration of music crafted from nature. Tickets are priced between £10 and £70, with priority booking available for Friends of the Philharmonia. General booking opens at 10am on Tuesday, 23rd April.
