Beethoven's Sixth Symphony is a thoroughly optimistic symphony, written by a composer with a great love of nature. Beethoven was happiest when he could take long, lonely walks in the countryside: "Forests, trees and rocks create the echo that man longs to hear," he stated.

In the Pastorale Symphony, Beethoven distills our love of nature and transforms it into music – and he does it so well that the landscape and wildlife take shape in the concert hall before our ears.

Pastoral

A string of Strauss' best songs, set to voice by Miah Persson – combined with Beethoven's nature-enjoying Pastorale symphony and the overture to Tannhäuser: The very best from the classical world.
Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony overflows with grateful enjoyment of nature. The symphony is a deeply personal depiction of what made Beethoven happiest: lonely walks through rural landscapes, small babbling brooks and mighty thunderstorms. It is uncomplicated and comes straight from the heart.

“How ice-cold is this little hand” – a hand held by the poet Rodolfo in the darkness of his artists’ commune! The ice-cold hand belongs to the seamstress Mimì – with whom he proceeds to throw himself into the Christmas season in Paris. Only a few months later, though, she finds living with Rodolfo torturous. It is not jealousy, however, which explains Rodolfo’s behaviour: he knows that Mimì will not last the year. "La Bohème" was based on Henri Murger’s extremely successful novel "Les scènes de la vie de bohème", which had entranced Puccini when he first read it. His wish to set the tale to music was so strong that he even risked ruining his friendship with Ruggero Leoncavallo, who was also working on a opera version of it. Today, the opera premiered in 1896 is considered one of the most popular stage works of all times – thanks to an overabundance of melodies and Puccini’s genius for character portraits.

Tchaikovsky's last symphony, Pathetique , is one of the most moving and enigmatic farewells in music history. The young Mozart also composed with a touch of melancholy in his Symphony No. 29.

In the summer of 1878, Brahms, returning from Italy, stopped in the village of Pörtschach, in Carinthia. His initial intention was to reach Vienna quickly, but drawn by the beauty and serenity of the place, he remained longer, as he himself wrote to his friend Theodor Billroth: “I stopped in this village on my way back from Italy, intending to continue on to Vienna. But the first day was so beautiful that I decided to stay the second; the second so beautiful that I decided to stay the third, and so on. Snow-white mountains, the blue lake, the trees covered in a tender green... no one could argue with me.”

It was in this splendid setting that the composer conceived his new work. His contemplation of a grand symphonic-instrumental work is also evident from his request for a large amount of music paper to be sent from Vienna, and from a letter to the critic Eduard Hanslick, in which he wrote: "So many melodies wander around this village that one must be careful not to trample on them."
