With Liszt and Bruckner, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra unites two titans of Romanticism. Franz Liszt revolutionized piano playing, dazzling audiences with his virtuosity and sparking ‘Lisztomania.’ The brilliant Lise de la Salle, known for her technical mastery and fiery temperament, is the perfect interpreter of his works. Anton Bruckner expanded the symphony orchestra’s horizons, crafting harmonically rich and grandiose compositions. His Fourth Symphony, the ‘Romantic,’ evokes medieval chivalry, complete with forest hunts and gallant knights. Under the baton of Eliahu Inbal, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra brings these romantic masterpieces to life in all their splendor.

A fascinating journey through 20th-century music awaits us for this concert, which begins with the disturbing Tombeau de Nelligan by Quebec composer Jacques Hétu. Commissioned a little over 30 years ago by the Orchestre symphonique de Québec, the piece pays tribute to the poet Émile Nelligan, who profoundly influenced Quebec literature.

In fitting fashion, the orchestral concert series at the Graz Music Association begins with a world premiere of Marcus Nigsch's Festmusik (Festive Music). Not only are the Graz Philharmonic celebrating an anniversary this year, but the wonderful Stefaniensaal in the Graz Music Association is also celebrating its 140th anniversary! A perfect match between hall and orchestra, which once again ensures special listening moments in this concert. Lise de la Salle's interpretation of Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 is followed by Richard Strauss's symphonic poem " Ein Heldenleben" (A Hero's Life) , with which Vassilis Christopoulos provides a counterpoint to the musical story of the anti-hero Till Eulenspiegel in this year's opening concert of the Graz Opera.

In the mid-19th century, Russia emerged as an independent culture on the musical map of Europe. Mikhail Glinka, the "Father of Russian Music," made a decisive contribution to this through his operas and instrumental works – his overture to Ruslan and Ludmila is one of the outstanding examples of brilliant orchestral music. Decades later, the country's leading symphonist was Pyotr Tchaikovsky, whose emotionally profound Symphony No. 5 of 1888 is arguably one of the most significant achievements in the field of orchestral music. A certain symphonic character is also inherent in Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1, a work of both concentrated and effective composition from his virtuoso period around 1800.

In 2017, French pianist Lise de la Salle made her jubilant debut at Konserthuset Stockholm with a recital in the Main Hall. Now she returns as soloist with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20, one of his most beloved piano concertos.

For the transition to 2024, Paris sets the tone! But a dream Paris, reinvented by George Gershwin, who brings out four horns from An American in Paris , a summary of his stay in the capital in the 1920s. All this between the blues themes that galvanize his Rhapsody and the gallops of Offenbach revisited by Manuel Rosenthal in a maddening medley of Parisian gaiety. The evening began with the irreverent overture to Candide by Bernstein, inspired by Voltaire: another story of an American in Paris.

Mendelssohn’s Scottish Symphony is a musical journey through the misty landscapes and ancient ruins of Scotland. Inspired by the composer’s travels, the symphony captures the rugged beauty and haunting mystery of the Highlands in a way that is both deeply personal and universally enchanting. Opening the program, Adolphe’s Underneath the Sheen envisions the movement of light through the canopy of the redwood forest, and Lise de la Salle joins for Chopin’s intimate and poetic Second Piano Concerto.
