Chilean conductor Paolo Bortolameolli opens this orchestral showcase with Chilean composer Miguel Farías’ brilliantly explosive Estallido. Jean Sibelius’ Violin Concerto presents an ambitious glimpse into the soul of a troubled composer. Grammy® Award-winning soloist Augustin Hadelich performs this intimate and demanding work. Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6, “Pathétique”, completed just nine days before his death, punctuates the composer’s life with a soaring work filled with raw emotion, lush orchestration and graceful melodies.

Genre-bending string trio Time for Three joins conductor Paolo Bortolameolli and the SF Symphony for a lively program highlighted by Kevin Puts’ SF Symphony co-commission Contact and Aaron Copland’s spirited El Salón México. Viennese operatic delicacies offer a luxuriant finale, including Richard Strauss' beloved Suite from Der Rosenkavalier.

Composed in the wake of WWI’s shocking horror, Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto reflects a new seriousness and darkened profundity in his music. Our soloist, Camille Thomas—whose playing Gramophone describes as “unfailingly exquisite in its tonal sheen and imaginative detail”—puts her spin on this cello masterwork. In his subscription series debut, the LA Phil’s dynamic Associate Conductor, Paolo Bortolameolli, takes on the intense and unrestrained emotions of the last symphony Tchaikovsky completed before his death.

In honor of Beethoven’s 250th birthday, this concert boasts a fabulous mix, from the composer’s radical Egmont Overture and Second Piano Concerto with Javier Perianes to the inspiring Prisoner’s Chorus from his only opera and his celebrated Choral Fantasy that served as a precursor to his Ninth Symphony – all concluding in a rare performance of Wellington’s Victory.
