Zubin Mehta leads the Munich Philharmonic in its second all-Brahms performance at Carnegie Hall. Brahms’s Second Piano Concerto is as notable for its gorgeous orchestral writing as it is its muscular piano part, and its complementary balance between the two is nearly unrivaled. In pianist Yefim Bronfman, the orchestra has an ideal soloist for this famously demanding piece. Also featured is Brahms’s epic Second Symphony, which Mehta is highly acclaimed for conducting. “I became a conductor because deep down I wanted to conduct Brahms’s four symphonies,” says Mehta.

The Munich Philharmonic performs its first of two all-Brahms concerts under revered Conductor Laureate Zubin Mehta. Brahms’s First Piano Concerto is a work of grand Romanticism, blending intense passion, tender affection, and personal tragedy into an awe-inspiring whole. Having become a pop culture staple from Disney’s Fantasia, the easy-going and meditative “Pastoral” symphony is a sharp contrast from the darker side of Beethoven. In the second half, hear the work that changed orchestral music—if not all of music—forever with the energetic “Eroica” (Heroic) Third Symphony.

Joining the Maestro for this historic concert will be young piano virtuoso Seong-Jin Cho performing the Schumann Piano Concerto. A native of Seoul, South Korea, he garnered world attention in October 2015 when he won First Prize at the renowned Chopin International Piano Competition in Warsaw. Our CAMA audience may remember his stunning performance of the Chopin Piano Concerto No.1 with the Warsaw Philharmonic back in November 2016.

Having quickly become a favorite of LA Phil and worldwide audiences, Korean star pianist Seong-Jin Cho puts his romantic side on full display with Schumann’s lone Piano Concerto, written specifically with his virtuosic wife Clara in his heart. Zubin Mehta leads a second half of Mahler’s First Symphony, an acoustically astounding, honest portrayal of life and death. This program includes the rarely performed, emotional Blumine (floral) second movement.

Berlioz’ Fantastic Symphony plays right into Mehta’s strengths of highlighting drama and color in the orchestra, bringing to life the saga of the drug-addled, love-obsessed artist who meets a hair-raising end.
Mehta opens the concert with a work he has conducted around the world, the late George Crumb’s song cycle Ancient Voices of Children on poems of Federico Garcia Lorca offers a transcendent phantasmagoria of sounds and silence.

Symphonie fantastique with Mehta

One of Mahler’s most massive creations, his Third Symphony vies to express the whole world, as the composer expected all symphonies to do. Long-time Mahler champion Zubin Mehta describes the Third—a piece close to his heart—as containing all of nature (“you can smell the Alpine flowers”), complete with nature’s contradictions of endearing beauty and stark brutality. Mehta stirs the vocal and instrumental ensembles into expressions of summer bursting forth, followed by profound communications from the flowers, the forest animals, humankind, and the angels, all capped by a monumental movement conveying Love itself.

A longtime champion of Anton Bruckner, the LA Phil’s Conductor Emeritus Zubin Mehta brings out the spiritual beauties of Bruckner’s poignant symphonic farewell, which Mehta has said “breaks your heart.” Already a star in Europe praised by BBC Music Magazine for “breathing life into every note,” Norwegian virtuoso Vilde Frang with Alban Berg’s compelling Violin Concerto.

With the voices of the LA Master Chorale and an international cast of soloists, Zubin Mehta leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic in Mozart’s stirring unfinished masterpiece. Though we don't know why Mozart stopped composing it, the Great C-minor Mass is considered one of the finest and most ambitious examples of his sacred music.
