A program specially assembled by Dmitri and Hyeyeon for you, our Kansas City audience. Joining them on stage will be the winner of the Queen Elizabeth Competition violinist Stella Chen, the multi-award winning violinist Sean Lee, the “most impressive” violist Matthew Lipman, and the spectacular violist Milena Pájaro-van de Stadt. In these hands, our International Chamber Music series will close with the fiery genius of Felix Mendelssohn in his String Quintet in B-flat Major. A true essence of “Brilliance!”

Like Mozart, Maurice Ravel excelled in every genre he touched, and his single string quartet is considered among the greatest composed. And when speaking of favorite quartets, no one would leave out the famous Adagio from Samuel Barber’s 1936 quartet, performed in this program by rising stars of the classical scene, the Viano String Quartet. Charles Martin Loeffler’s recently-discovered octet also provides a unique, American reflection on Ravel’s Introduction and Allegro, also featuring the harp.

Ravel’s melodic Duo for Violin and Cello, which honors his mentor Claude Debussy; Arensky’s powerful Piano Trio, written in memory of beloved Russian cellist Karl Davidoff; and Fauré’s sublime Requiem, a profound reflection on the passage of life and the peace of the afterlife.

The journey into scandalous love affairs continues with Debussy's "Six Epigraphes Antiques for Piano Four-Hands," a piece that captures the composer's own sordid affairs. The piano will be masterfully handled by Inon Barnatan and Conrad Tao, promising a performance that intertwines complexity with beauty.

The final piece, Franck's "Piano Quintet in F Minor," is a powerful exploration of torrid infatuation. Conrad Tao returns to the piano, joined by Blake Pouliot and Simone Porter on violins, Masumi Per Rostad on viola, and Paul Wiancko on cello, to bring this passionate work to life.
