This piece holds a special place in Maestro Muti's repertoire, marking a return to a work he performed with the BRSO forty years ago.

Music Director Emeritus for Life Riccardo Muti returns with Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony, a work that shattered the symphonic conventions of its day, with themes of heroism, struggle and triumph. Be transported to the landscapes of southern Spain with vivacious, dance-inspired works by Falla and Chabrier. The journey begins in Riccardo Muti’s native Italy with a boisterous overture by Donizetti and sumptuous ballet music by Verdi. Golijov’s Megalopolis Suite features music from his score to the 2024 release of Francis Ford Coppola’s epic film, in which the fate of Ancient Rome haunts a modern world.

Revered conductor Riccardo Muti leads the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) in music by two of the great Italian opera composers, plus Tchaikovsky’s formidable Fourth Symphony. Our 2023–2024 season-opening concerts at Carnegie Hall showed Muti and the CSO in peak form as one of the world’s top Verdi partnerships, performing the overture to Giovanna d’Arco with a “crackling energy and a sense of reveling—not just in the music, but also in the ensemble itself,” according to The New York Times. Muti is also highly renowned for his performances of the Tchaikovsky symphonies, and this concert promises an evening of high drama and thrilling orchestral playing.

Every year since 1971, Riccardo Muti has guest conducted the Vienna Philharmonic, with countless iconic performances that include the New Year’s Eve concerts, Salzburg Festival, and more. The celebrated partnership now returns to the Hall in this first of three consecutive programs. The evening opens with Schubert’s Fourth Symphony, “Tragic,” an emotionally charged staple that borrows freely from Haydn and Mozart. Audiences are then treated to a Bruckner symphony—always a notable event in the hands of the Vienna Philharmonic, an ensemble that boasts a remarkably close and storied relationship with the composer.

Riccardo Muti conducts the Vienna Philharmonic in back-to-back concerts at Carnegie Hall. This Saturday night program includes the Hall’s first-ever performance of Catalani’s Contemplazione, which transposes the heart-wrenching lyricism of Italian opera into a 10-minute orchestral piece. Stravinsky’s La baiser de la fée (The Fairy’s Kiss), based on The Ice-Maiden, pays tribute to the life and music of Tchaikovsky, and many New York audience members will recognize it from Balanchine’s iconic ballet. Also featured is Schubert’s magnificent final symphony—the Ninth—a work with overtly Beethoven-esque characteristics and a particularly helpful subtitle: “Great.”

This matinee performance concludes the Vienna Philharmonic and conductor Riccardo Muti’s back-to-back concerts at Carnegie Hall. They perform the last—and grandest—of Mozart’s symphonies: No. 41, “Jupiter,” a culmination of the composer’s mastery of Classical music conventions. It is also, as far as we know today, an extremely rare piece written of Mozart’s own accord, with no paid commission connected to or influencing it. The program also features Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, “From the New World.” One of the classical canon’s most beloved works, it received its premiere here at Carnegie Hall with the composer himself in attendance.

Esteban Batallán, the CSO’s principal trumpet since 2019, makes his much-anticipated debut as a soloist with the Orchestra in a pair of brilliant, high-flying concertos. Riccardo Muti frames the program with Joseph Haydn’s tempestuous Symphony No. 48 and Schubert’s Haydn-inspired Tragic Symphony.

No work delivers such dizzying pleasures while going to hell — and back — as Berlioz’s dramatic opera. Riccardo Muti conducts this kaleidoscopic work, with its timeless themes of temptation and redemption. An all-star cast joins the CSO and Chicago Symphony Chorus, which vividly portrays the hordes of peasants and soldiers, damned souls and demons.
