The Orchestra of St. Luke’s 2024 season draws to a soul-soothing close with an all-Brahms program of two choral masterpieces. Principal Conductor Bernard Labadie leads the combined forces of La Chapelle de Québec chamber choir and the Handel and Haydn Society Chorus in the Begräbnisgesang and Ein deutsches Requiem, featuring soloists Andrè Schuen and Erin Morley. While both works are sacred in word and tone, Brahms eschewed liturgical traditions in favor of more humanist expressions, and he explicitly referred to his requiem as “a human Requiem,” written to comfort the living. The Begräbnisgesang, written nearly ten years earlier, can almost be seen as its precursor. Taking the listener from intense grief to hopeful, peaceful conclusions, both pieces assure us that all lives continue in the memory of the living.

This electric event shines a spotlight on Opera Theatre’s Richard Gaddes Festival Artist and Gerdine Young Artist Programs as these rising opera stars perform iconic melodies from opera’s greatest hits and cherished rarities. Center Stage is curated by Patricia Racette, Artistic Director of Young Artist Programs, and James Robinson, Artistic Director of Opera Theatre. Opera Theatre’s Young Artist Programs are known for launching the careers of many major opera stars, including names such as Jamie Barton, Lawrence Brownlee, Christine Goerke, Erin Morley, Paula Murrihy, Matthew Polenzani, Morris Robinson, Michael Spyres, Russell Thomas, and many more.

An ensemble of leading lights takes the stage for Offenbach’s fantastical final work, headlined by tenor Benjamin Bernheim in the title role of the tormented poet. Hoffmann’s trio of lovers are sung by soprano Erin Morley as the mechanical doll Olympia, soprano Pretty Yende as the plagued diva Antonia, and mezzo-soprano Clémentine Margaine as the Venetian seductress Giulietta. Marco Armiliato conducts Bartlett Sher’s evocative production, which also features bass-baritone Christian Van Horn as the Four Villains and mezzo-soprano Vasilisa Berzhanskaya in an important company debut as Hoffmann’s friend Nicklausse.

Verdi’s heartbreaking masterpiece returns, with reigning Verdi baritone Quinn Kelsey reprising his devastating portrayal of the hunchbacked court jester. Radiant soprano Nadine Sierra is his naïve daughter, Gilda, and tenor Stephen Costello is the rakish Duke of Mantua, with Maestro Pier Giorgio Morandi on the podium to conduct Bartlett Sher’s Weimar-inspired production. A second run of performances features the Met debut of rising tenor Pene Pati, alongside soprano Erin Morley and baritone Luca Salsi, conducted by Maurizio Benini.
