In the 2023/2024 season, the Duisburg Philharmonic, in their exploration of transcultural processes, already explored the Indian Nobel Prize-winning poet-philosopher Rabindranath Tagore. The program for the second chamber concert, compiled by Kamalini Mukherji, now also follows the Europe-India axis, always looking in both directions. The Indian singer, who will also curate the "Eigenzeit – Music of Now" festival in the 2025/2026 season, is considered one of the leading exponents of the music of the Bengali-Indian polymath Rabindranath Tagore, who reshaped the culture and language of Bengal. In this unique concert, Tagore's music will be reinterpreted through various musical traditions. The performance begins with a traditional Indian ensemble – esraj, tabla/khol, and Indian flute. This is followed by bridge instruments such as the lavta and the bağlama from the Middle East, followed by a Western soundscape featuring flamenco guitar, saxophone, and other instruments. The concert culminates in a fusion of these musical worlds, reflecting Tagore's embrace of global influences.

Dafür hat unser Chefdirigent Joseph Bastian wieder ein Programm zusammengestellt, das mit seinem Schwung wunderbar zur sommerlichen Stimmung passt. Diesmal geht es nach Südamerika: Der Brasilianer Heitor Villa-Lobos und der Argentinier Alberto Ginastera verbanden den rhythmischen Drive ihrer Heimat mit der kompositorischen Raffinesse der europäischen Moderne. Astor Piazzolla machte den vormals verruchten Tango Argentino konzertsaalfähig; in seinem wohl berühmtesten Stück verabschiedete er sich mit sehnsuchtsvollen Klängen von seinem Vater. Darius Milhaud galt in den 1920ern als enfant terrible der Pariser Musikszene; als Attaché des französischen Botschafters in Rio de Janeiro schnappte er lokale Sounds auf und integrierte sie in seine Werke. Mit der Saxofon-Virtuosin Asya Fateyeva ist eine dynamische Solistin mit von der Partie, die ebenfalls locker zwischen Klassik und anderen Musikstilen wandelt.

After Vivi Vassileva in 2023, this season we are once again putting a young instrumentalist at the center of the BaseCamp: Asya Fateyeva is a saxophonist born in Crimea who has been playing in the » premier league « since winning the German Music Competition in 2012. She won the ECHO Klassik in 2016. For this exceptional artist, there are no musical boundaries, just heaps of exciting music from all genres that she adapts. The focal point of our BaseCamp New Music is the fantastically beautiful saxophone concerto Saivo by Finnish composer Outi Tarkiainen. She sees music as a force of nature that can change lives – and calls for us to rethink and change our relationship with nature. Like Sauli Zinovjev (see Freitagskonzert 3), she is interested in ancient rituals, especially those of the Sámi people of her Finnish homeland: for the Sámi, Saivo is a sacred place where dialogue is possible beyond the boundaries of this world. The I and the you, water and stone, fire and ash and a descent to the spirits of the ancestors – Saivo is a great spiritual journey, made for the vastness of space in BaseCamp!

In a kind of mini-residency, we present saxophonist Asya Fateyeva, who will not only be our guest at BaseCamp on 17 May, but has also brought a colourful concert programme from the Baroque period with works based around the noble concept of hope to the Old Federal Council. But beware: » Hope, that’s a dangerous thing! «, as not only Lana del Rey sings, but as poets, writers and artists of all genres have been saying since ancient times! But that doesn’t stop composers from writing the most beautiful music on this subject. The unusual combination of saxophone with baroque harp and lute promises exciting sound journeys into the emotionally charged world of the baroque!

The enthusiastic and witty young saxophonist Asya Fateyeva is coming to Duisburg as an improviser - so she can do that too! We can look forward to a very spontaneous dialogue: Asya Fateyeva and Michael Gees are playing together for the first time today. A chamber music collaboration in the here and now, the only theme: finding common ground without looking for it.

KOMED is a format for the spontaneous, collaborative invention of contemporary music. In the text, in the noise, in the moment, we listen to sounds, put them under the magnifying glass of attention (meditation) and create connections.

We commit ourselves to starting something together for about an hour, to staying in touch and letting ourselves be guided by the idea we recognize as shared. Every acoustic event counts and contributes to the whole. The unexpected can happen at any time and challenge us to integrate. Ideally, and not infrequently, we discover music that none of us would have thought of on our own. Those present increasingly experience themselves and each other as participants: without them and their intentional listening, nothing would have been heard. After all, who would want to bear witness to the present if not those who are there?

He was perhaps the greatest genius in music history, later eclipsed, if at all, only by the child prodigy Mozart. Yet Johann Sebastian Bach not only gifted posterity with numerous musical masterpieces, but also with several sons, some of whom followed in their all-powerful father's footsteps. First and foremost, Carl Philipp Emanuel, Johann Sebastian Bach's second eldest son, whose "sensitive" style made him the most popular Bach of the second half of the 18th century—while Johann Sebastian Bach's eldest son, Wilhelm Friedemann, was famous during his lifetime primarily for his phenomenal improvisational skills on all keyboard instruments. When Asya Fateyeva and her fellow musicians perform Baroque sonatas by the Bach dynasty, they do so on an instrument that Bach himself could not have even known, for the saxophone was not invented until the 19th century. When the saxophonist approaches early music on a comparatively modern instrument, she does so in the spirit of Bach: He was not only interested in the compositional possibilities of new or improved instruments such as the "Well-Tempered Clavier," but was also extremely flexible in instrumentation questions in his masterful compositions.

This is going to be exciting! In 2021, Anna Clyne created a concerto featuring the saxophone as an unusual solo instrument, transporting us to mythical realms: "'Glasslands' conjures an imaginary world with three realms ruled by the banshee," says Clyne, "a female spirit who, in Irish folklore, announces the death of a family member by howling, shrieking, or wailing, usually in the stillness of the night." The soloist is Asya Fateyeva, a German saxophonist of Ukrainian descent. And Tchaikovsky's Fifth, one of his most popular symphonies, also features predestined events: "Total resignation to fate, or, what amounts to the same thing, to the inscrutable decree of providence," he wrote, referring to the first movement.
