The concerto’s emotional peaks and valleys will sparkle in the hands of soloist Sir Stephen Hough. Conductor Sir Mark Elder, in his first appearances in San Diego, leads this program of classical titans, including Camille Saint-Saëns’ sonorous Symphony No. 3 featuring the organ of Copley Symphony Hall. Rimsky-Korsakov’s passionate Suite from The Tale of Tsar Saltan opens this vivid program.

He is the first classical performer to be awarded a MacArthur Fellowship and only classical pianist to be knighted this century. One of the most distinctive artists of his generation, Hough’s awe-inspiring range and command is even more astonishing live, worthy of every superlative that he’s been given.

One of the most distinctive artists of his generation and a longtime CAMA favorite, Sir Stephen Hough is a true Renaissance man, combining a distinguished international career as a pianist with those of composer, writer, and painter. Named by The Economist as one of “Twenty Living Polymaths” (a person of great learning and varied expertise), he was knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2022 and was the first classical performer to be awarded a MacArthur Fellowship (“Genius Grant”) in 2001. Sir Stephen brings his trademark eloquence and precision to what will be his fifth Masterseries recital appearance at the Lobero, with music by composers close to his heart. From the mysterious and mystical realms of Mompou and Scriabin to the evocative imagery of Debussy and Hough’s own Partita, Hough leaves his stamp on all of this repertoire. His recital closes with a suite of pieces selected from the second volume of Liszt’s Années de pèlerinage—the famous “Petrarch Sonnets” as well as the astounding “Dante Sonata.”

The 2023 concert season kicks off with a piano recital by the incomparable Sir Stephen Hough, who we are privileged to welcome back to Tippet Rise for the third time. Regarded as one of the most important and distinctive artists of his generation, Hough’s career also encompasses those of composer and writer. Named by The Economist as one of Twenty Living Polymaths, Hough was the first classical performer to be awarded a MacArthur Fellowship (2001). In 2014 he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) and was knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2022. This year, Hough will perform compositions by Federico Mompou, Claude Debussy, Franz Liszt, as well as one of his own compositions – Partita.

Dvořák’s enchanting Symphony No. 8 invites listeners on a sun-drenched jaunt through nature’s endless charms, and the result is joyous, uplifting, and life-affirming. Surging with youthful fire, tender passion, and thunderous power, Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 1 looms large as one of music history’s most monumental and stunning creative achievements—all the more amazing that Brahms wrote it at the tender age of 25. Stephen Hough, “a virtuoso who begins where others leave off” (Washington Post) joins Jonathon Heyward and the orchestra, and the concerts open with Carlos’s Simon’s Beethoven-inspired Fate Now Conquers.

For its second Cal Performances concert this season, the peerless Takács Quartet collaborates with acclaimed British-born pianist and composer Stephen Hough. The ensemble performs the Bay Area premiere of Les Six Rencontres, a new work by Hough as well as his first string quartet; Hough then joins them for Dvořák’s elegant Op. 81 Piano Quintet. Pianist and ensemble have enjoyed a long and fruitful musical relationship, and their recording together of the Brahms Piano Quintet earned a Grammy nomination; as the Guardian noted of this pairing, “chamber music does not get much better.” The Takács also performs Haydn’s Sunrise quartet from the composer’s Op. 76 works, which are prized for their spirit of invention and brilliant ensemble interaction.
