Elgar - Cello Concerto - Sheku Kanneh-Mason [BBC Proms 2019]

Star pianist Daniil Trifonov performs Robert Schumann’s rousing Piano Concerto, a Romantic masterpiece that uplifts and inspires. Lithuanian conductor Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla makes her NY Phil debut, opening with a piece for strings by her compatriot Raminta Šerkšnytė and closing with selections from Lemminkäinen Suite, Sibelius’s orchestral adaptation of Finnish folk tales.

Her tenure has been one of unqualified success, generating excitement among live audiences and critics worldwide. She brings the CBSO to Ann Arbor as part of a limited US tour with cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason performing Elgar’s Cello Concerto, composed in the aftermath of World War I. The orchestra had a close association with Elgar, who conducted the ensemble’s very first concert over a century ago, in 1920. The program also includes an abbreviated orchestral rendering of Thomas Adès’s third opera, based on Luis Buñuel’s 1962 surreal film about a collection of society characters who find themselves inexplicably trapped together at a post-opera party. Also joining the performance is cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason, whose meteoric rise to fame has established him as one of present day’s most sought-after musicians.

The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra is the flagship of musical life in Birmingham—and one of the world’s great orchestras. The tradition began with their very first concert back in 1920—conducted by Sir Edward Elgar. The CBSO became internationally famous when conductor Simon Rattle took the helm in 1980. In 2016, the CBSO welcomed the appointment of Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, a native of Vilnius, Lithuania, as its Music Director and now Principal Guest Conductor, following her time with the Los Angeles Philharmonic as a Dudamel Fellow, Assistant Conductor, and Associate Conductor. British cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason became a household name in 2018 after performing at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at Windsor Castle, watched by nearly two billion people globally. Sheku’s album Elgar on the Decca Classical label made him the first cellist in history to reach the UK Top 10.

Granada Theatre

In this transporting program, a veteran virtuoso performs the dramatic Violin Concerto by prolific Soviet composer Mieczysław Weinberg, a Shostakovich colleague. Mirga leads Mahler’s shortest and sweetest symphony, which concludes with a child’s view of life in heaven.
