For Women and Girls Only is a groundbreaking novel on the reversal of mainstream portrayals of ultra-Orthodox religious women, and of those who have left the community yet maintain ties to it. It is the first work to focus on the ultra-Orthodox female art scene in music, film, and dance across North America and on social media.

This talk examines sound in the Spanish Franciscan missions of California. The cast, suspended metal bell, or church bell, was a crucial tool of the mission system in Alta California (1769–1846). Adapted from the Western European tradition, church bells with “sound and voice” generated the soundmark of the mission sensorium—shaping time, space, and discipline—in which concentrated Native peoples negotiated missionization. Beginning in the 1880s, the mission bell came to represent “fantasy heritage” aesthetics of belonging and nostalgia for Anglo Californians. Yet, more recently, California Indian truth-telling has sought to reckon with the legacies of the mission bell as a symbol of the consequences of colonization for their ancestors.

Sticky Rice by Boni Alvarez centers on a group of San Francisco gaysian friends who have internalized such popular depictions and explores what happens when they are forced to confront their self-hatred and prejudices. Sticky Rice is about unwrapping the "sticky rice" — slang for Asian American men who desire only other Asian American men) — unearthing gay Asian beauty outside the White gaze, the journey to self-love, love for community, and the love of your chosen family.

Step back in time to Paris in 1867, a pivotal year that not only marked the city as the cultural epicenter of Europe but also a thriving hub for arts patronage under the glittering rule of Napoleon III. Within this golden age, Charles Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette premiered at the Théâtre Lyrique, captivating audiences to the tune of 89 performances in its first year alone.

This lecture will delve deep into the lush cultural landscape of the Second Empire (1852-1870), exploring how the city’s fervor for the arts and the Universal Exposition provided fertile ground for opera.

Rebel Girl: My Life as a Feminist Punk

Many ghost stories utilize themes of apparitions and haunting to elicit terror, warning listeners to abide by moral codes. However, since 2007, a phenomenon of Mexican corrido (ballad) composition, which I define as ghost smuggling ballads, shares a collective ghost story meant to elicit hope, narrating transborder encounters with the ghost of Saint Toribio Romo, an apparition who smuggles undocumented migrants across the U.S.-Mexico border. Saint Toribio, also called the Holy Coyote (Smuggler), was a priest killed in Jalisco during the 1926-1929 Cristero Rebellion, an armed revolt against the Mexican government in response to anticlerical laws. The Catholic Church canonized Saint Toribio in 2000 but has never recognized him as the patron saint of immigrants, a title bestowed on him by migrants.
