Named one of the greatest string quartets of the last 100 years by BBC Music Magazine, the two-time GRAMMY-nominated Dover Quartet is one of the world’s most in-demand chamber ensembles. The group’s awards include a stunning sweep of all prizes at the 2013 Banff International String Quartet Competition, grand and first prizes at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition, and prizes at the Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition. Making their SCMS debut, the Dover Quartet is an aural experience of the highest caliber.

Schubert’s Adagio and Rondo concertante sparkles with youthful vitality, while Mozart’s String Quintet in C minor reveals a rare, intense depth, showcasing a darker side of his musical voice. After intermission, Brahms’ Sextet No. 1—one of his most beloved chamber works—fills the stage with a rich, expansive sound. The interplay of two violins, two violas, and two cellos creates a beautiful balance of lyrical depth and spirited energy, culminating in a lively and jubilant finale.

In addition to playing bassoon in a woodwind quintet (two flutes, oboe, clarinet, and bassoon) with his brother Frank, the young Edward Elgar wrote seven pieces of “Harmony Music” beginning in 1878, seven years before the publication of his Opus 1. The players for whom Elgar wrote the quintets were his young friends, who met regularly for music on Sunday afternoons in a garden shed behind his father’s shop.

To mark the anniversary of Dmitri Shostakovich’s death, our chamber music collaboration with the Leipzig Gewandhaus is turning to one of his most significant works: the second piano trio. It was written in memory of Ivan Sollertinsky, the critic and musicologist who not only introduced the composer to the music of Gustav Mahler, but also provided important impulses for Shostakovich’s own work. Dedicated to his friend in the year of his death, the trio also reflects on the hardships and despair of WWII. In the final movement, a melody styled on Jewish folk music recalls the victims of both Hitler and Stalin. The tune was later reworked in the famous 8th String Quartet from 1960 as a poignant reminder to those who survived.
