What begins with four gentle timpani beats ends in a pianissimo that, however, has nothing gentle about it. Beethoven's great violin concerto with star soloist Hilary Hahn and the timpani as the violin's proud accompaniment at the beginning - then Shostakovich's 8th Symphony, a work of mighty seriousness. As part of the complete recording of all Shostakovich symphonies, the hr Symphony Orchestra and its chief conductor Alain Altinoglu have reached number eight. With this composer, says Altinoglu, you have to dare to go to the limits of instrumental possibilities. Hilary Hahn also has all kinds of borderline experiences to offer, and her tone always remains flawless - it is not for nothing that the American with roots in the Palatinate is among the world's violinists. It was in 1995 when the 15-year-old made her debut in Germany, with the Beethoven Violin Concerto, which she already mastered with dreamlike certainty. In this program as part of the "Focus Hilary Hahn" at the Alte Oper Frankfurt, she will be a guest with Beethoven again exactly 30 years later, and with her own, very special sovereignty and tonal warmth.

Anno Schreier's aim when composing his "Sinfonia amorosa e giocosa" was to capture the "allegedly light, relaxed tone of Mozart's early symphonies," and perhaps also their humor. Tchaikovsky also attempted to awaken the spirit of a bygone era in his Variations on a Rococo Theme, whose soloist will be the award-winning cellist Gabriel Schwabe. Beethoven's Symphony No. 3, which reflects his initial fascination with the rebellious Napoleon, exudes a revolutionary spirit.

Cornelius Meister and the Staatsorchester Stuttgart are once again performing a symphony cycle this season.
Following the complete Schumann and Brahms symphonies, the last six Mozart symphonies and symphonies by Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky, the focus is now on the only four major symphonies by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. His First, written at the age of 15, was premièred at the Mendelssohn home for his sister Fanny's birthday. This was followed in 1830 by the so-called "Reformation Symphony". However, as it only appeared in print posthumously in 1868, it was given the number 5.

We will conclude our concert season with a special treat, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto in B-flat major, featuring David Savage, PSO’s principal bassoonist as the soloist, performing this expressive and technically demanding concerto.

The concert will also include Robert Schumann’s lovely Symphony No. 1 (also known as the “Spring”), a celebration of springtime and renewal, as well as Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Egmont Overture, Op. 84,” an intensely dramatic piece symbolizing the fight for freedom.

A sunrise in the mountains, a strenuous climb, then the coolness of the forest and the sound of the waterfall. Lush mountain meadows and the ringing of cowbells, finally an approaching thunderstorm, lightning and thunder and a narrow survival at the dangerous height. What, if not a symphony orchestra, could depict this intoxication of colors and sounds? And who, if not Richard Strauss, could paint this sound painting? The Alpine Symphony features over 100 musicians, including wind machines, thunder sheets and cowbells. But Strauss depicts his mountain world with great sensitivity, creating new timbres in very different ensembles. And the hike to the mountain peak is not just to be understood literally - the symphonic poem is also related to the writings of Friedrich Nietzsche and can be understood as a depiction of an entire life.

Revel in the radiant strings as they illuminate Bach’s iconic Brandenburg Concerto No. 3. Then, we’ll welcome Principal Viola Kathryn Dey to the stage for some Baroque-inspired brilliance! Katie will enchant us with a concerto by French composer Henri Casadesus, a work deeply infused with the spirit of the Bach family, particularly Johann Sebastian Bach’s son, Johann Christian. Next, we head to Brazil to experience the rhythmic vitality of Brazilian composer Camargo Guarnieri’s Concerto para cordas e percussão, blending strings and percussion in a dynamic fusion of sound. Finally, we conclude with Grieg’s sparkling Holberg Suite, written in the style of eighteenth-century dances.

Igor Stravinsky’s wild Russian folk-fable of a ballet The Firebird, retains the power to shock and enthrall into its second century. Kicking off the program is the 2002 orchestral piece Chorale—based on the familiar Bach chorale “Es ist genug”—from Esa-Pekka Salonen’s longtime friend Magnus Lindberg. Alban Berg’s last completed score and probably his most famous, the Violin Concerto functions both as an elegy for a surrogate daughter who died too soon, and as a requiem for himself.

Richard Strauss’ amazing ability to tell a story in music is on display in this concert. Till Eulenspiegel is a prankster who comes to sticky end (Strauss goes to town when Till’s exploits finally catch up with him). And in Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life), Strauss appears to be the hero of his own story, with quotations from his other works scattered throughout the score.

Distinguished Portuguese pianist Maria João Pires, hailed as “an elegant technician and probing interpreter” by The New York Times, returns to Symphony Center. The same applies to Prokofiev's Third Symphony, composed in the early Soviet Union amid turbulent times.
