Renowned as the composer of 16 Hollywood film scores, including The Adventures of Robin Hood and The Sea Hawk, Erich Wolfgang Korngold — a child prodigy coincidentally named after Mozart — was also the composer of operas, concerti, orchestral works, and chamber music. His lush, melodic, and intensely romantic piano quintet, completed in 1921, goes straight to the heart — without Olivia de Haviland or Errol Flynn.

Two of today’s most acclaimed guitarist-composers present a new collaborative work for themselves and chamber ensemble. Tyler plays "cosmic country," folk, indie folk and pop rock. Based in Alexandria, VA, Williams is an acoustic fingerstyle guitarist with an unorthodox, modern style of playing. She utilizes various techniques including alternate tunings, percussive hits, and lap tapping in her music to great effect.

Chamber ensembles featuring rising star musicians from Kaufman Music Center’s Special Music School and Lucy Moses School explore a broad range of repertoire.
Special Music School/M. 859 is a K-12 New York City public school that provides intensive music education during the school day, including fully-funded instrument lessons, music classes and ensembles along with academics.

The Balourdet Quartet explores as a string quartet what it takes to work together in a chaotic world and overcome challenges through music and friendship. As Beethoven once said, "True friendship can be based only on the union of similar ways of being.” Experience the synthesis of minds and personalities through some of the greatest chamber music ever written. Join the Balourdet Quartet on this journey with exciting stage and lighting design in this innovative concert experience!

Our season-long celebration of women composers concludes with this program of piano and vocal works by Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel and her brother Felix Mendelssohn. Completed shortly before her death, Fanny’s Piano Trio is one of her most original and impressive pieces. By contrast, Felix’s rarely performed Piano Sextet was written when he was only 15, and the work was unknown until decades after his death. The songs by both Fanny and Felix on this program show the similarities and the unique qualities of the two siblings. Soprano Liv Redpath joins St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble to amplify the voice of Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel.

Celebrated Canadian-American pianist Marc-André Hamelin joins OSL for this program dedicated to the expressive powers of the piano quintet. The first Black female composer to have her music performed by a major American orchestra, Florence Price was a prolific and innovative American artist whose accomplishments have been unjustly ignored for decades. On this program, OSL continues its commitment to championing Price’s music by presenting her evocative and masterful Piano Quintet in A minor alongside Brahms’ Piano Quintet, considered by many to be one of the best examples of the piano quintet.

The festival will open with a concert introducing audiences to the music of Borys Liatoshynsky, the father of Ukrainian contemporary music. In honor of 55 years since his passing, our first concert will place his works in the musical context in which they were written, alongside composers who inspired him including figures from the post-Romantic and early avant-garde periods.

Ukrainian Contemporary Music Festival: Tribute to Borys Liatoshynsky

Though still largely unknown outside Ukraine, Liatoshynsky’s music reveals fascinating parallels with western works and inspires thought-provoking conversations between musical worlds. In our closing concert, pieces from Liatoshynsky’s early expressionist period will be placed alongside those of the Second Viennese School, while his later works, folk-inflected and shaped by a need for broad appeal, will be juxtaposed against 20th century American music working towards similar projects.
