Deeply thoughtful conductor Markus Poschner returns to explore the theme of self-reflection, opening with a soul-stirring violin concerto by Hollywood-favorite composer Kris Bowers (Bridgerton, The Color Purple, Green Book). Performed by Charles Yang, For A Younger Self takes listeners on a journey of reminiscence and self-discovery as the music mirrors the experiences and aspirations of youth.

A sense of place permeates our April program, featuring a world premiere piece for clarinet and orchestra depicting the mountain bike trails of the region. Laura Grantier, former principal clarinetist of the U.S. Navy Band, has commissioned the work from composer Nadine Silverman especially to be premiered with the Salt Lake Symphony. The program opens in another dry climate, with Maurice
Ravel’s depiction of morning in Spain. Alborada del gracioso is known as one of Ravel’s most colorful orchestrations with everything from the expected castanets to a remarkable 24-part division of the string section to achieve the sonic effects of Galician dawn. The program concludes with the powerful Symphonic Dances by Russian composer, Sergei Rachmaninov, a work that incorporates the composer’s gift for obsessive melody with his most innovative orchestrations.

Musical Latitudes

Our final concert is an exploration of sound and silence. Our friend Phillip Bimstein will host the evening, and our very own Charlotte Bell will transform the pre-concert talk into a meditation and listening workshop. Gorecki’s powerful Symphony no. 3 with soprano Melissa Heath will provide the main sonic exploration of the evening, a work I have hoped to conduct for a long time. Prepare for a meditative and moving night with the Salt Lake Symphony, a concert unlike ever you have experienced before!

Bold and notoriously difficult, the work depicts the hero’s battles, critics, love story, and victories—yet, rather than ending in a blaze of glory, Strauss closes his saga with a serene and reflective retreat as his hero steps away from the world, content with his legacy.
