Featuring SPCO violinist Maureen Nelson’s new arrangement of Medieval works, this program is a musical response to the poet Rumi who wrote: “The lamps are different, but the Light is the same. One matter, one energy, one Light, one Light-mind, endlessly emanating all things.” Opening with music of Hildegard von Bingen, this Express Concert is a journey of light through the eyes of different composers. At the heart lies Franz Joseph Haydn’s uplifting Midday Symphony and Osvaldo Golijov’s lush Tenebrae for String Quartet.

Curated by SPCO Principal Bassoonist Andrew Brady and flutist Alicia McQuerrey, this special Express Concert includes evocative works by Maurice Ravel, Astor Piazzolla and Osvaldo Golijov which explore the passion-filled dance between life and death. The program features Adolphus Hailstork’s hauntingly beautiful romance for viola, performed by SPCO violist Hyobi Sim, a flute solo by Valerie Coleman and Lili Boulanger’s impressionist masterpiece D’un matin de printemps.

In this program curated by SPCO musicians Steven Copes and James Ferree, piano works by Robert and Clara Schumann and Sergei Prokofiev receive surprising new arrangements by Ferree and former Artistic Partner and composer Stephen Prutsman. Likewise, Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Elegy and Polka” are excerpted arrangements from his opera Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District and ballet The Golden Age. SPCO Concertmaster Steven Copes concludes by leading the orchestra in Franz Joseph Haydn’s delightful Symphony No. 94, nicknamed the Surprise … no spoilers, please!

This is exactly what Edward Elgar did as he honored the important people in his life in each of the 14 variations of his Enigma theme. Hailed as “exceptional” and “mesmerizing” by the Star Tribune, violinist Augustin Hadelich returns to Orchestra Hall to play Benjamin Britten’s Violin Concerto. The concerts include Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Idyll, continuing the Orchestra’s championing of music recorded for its Listening Project initiative.

Not long before he wrote his famous Cello Concerto, Antonín Dvořák spent time exploring places Minnesotans might recognize—staying for a summer in the tiny town of Spillville in northern Iowa and visiting Minnehaha Falls in Minneapolis—as he sought out new sparks of inspiration. Hear Principal Cello Anthony Ross perform one of his most passionate works from this creative period, alongside a remarkable Third Symphony by Dvořák’s own friend and mentor, Johannes Brahms.

This mid-January chamber music concert will invigorate your senses and heighten your curiosity. Minnesota Orchestra string and woodwind musicians will share the music of love songs and passionate tangos, evocative personal journeys and unusual musical conversations—from the lyricism of Samuel Barber to a new work by Wynton Marsalis.

Smetana, Prokofiev, two thrilling debuts and a Minnesota Orchestra first all at once! Conductor Ruth Reinhardt and saxophonist Steven Banks, a 2022 Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient, make their debuts with the Minnesota Orchestra to showcase Billy Childs’ recently premiered Diaspora, a concerto for saxophone and orchestra. The work co-commissioned by the Orchestra highlights Black experiences in America, with inspiration from poets including Langston Hughes and Maya Angelou. Then: romance, drama and intrigue capture the evening with a suite from Prokofiev’s gripping ballet score.

Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky had myriad emotions as he embarked on his fantastic Fifth Symphony, as did Arnold Schoenberg as he worked on Erwartung, writing that “It is impossible for a person to have only one sensation at a time...one has thousands simultaneously.” Join the Minnesota Orchestra and South Korean conductor Eun Sun Kim for an intimate journey of twists and turns, through anticipation, serendipity and, ultimately, fate—in a program that opens with a work by Minnesota Orchestra Composer Institute alumnus Texu Kim.

Beloved vocal activist, soulful singer, and composer Melanie DeMore returns to Minnesota using her music as what she calls “a weapon of mass connection.” Featuring music by Damien Geter, Marques Garrett, Joel Thompson, and songs from the African diaspora, WITNESS: Leading with Love is the place to hear Melanie and VocalEssence share the world premiere performance of an extended work co-created through conversation and stick-pounding workshops with Twin Cities community members. This impassioned call for the revival of love, the rebirth of peace, and the emergence of a community where violence ceases will challenge us all to “put one foot in front of the other and lead with love.”

WITNESS: Leading with Love

You will be dancing in your seat from the first note to the last as you listen to Domingo Hindoyan conduct the Minnesota Orchestra with guest trumpet soloist Pacho Flores. In Arturo Márquez’s new trumpet concerto, Flores delivers the many colors and flavors of Latin American dance bands while he performs on four different types of trumpets. These concerts conclude with Dvořák’s radiant Eighth Symphony, interwoven with a multitude of folksongs and delightful dance melodies.

Pianist Yuja Wang has graced stages all over the world, earning rave reviews that describe her performances as daredevil, dazzling and captivating. Now, she makes her Minnesota Orchestra debut in an exhilarating piano concerto by Bela Bartók alongside returning guest conductor Hannu Lintu. The Orchestra also performs Rachmaninoff’s Second Symphony in this concert that travels through starry nights, showcases extreme technical prowess, and fills the soul with feelings of deep romance and passion.

Estonian conductor Kristiina Poska makes a long-awaited debut with the Minnesota Orchestra. Joining her for this program is American cellist Sterling Elliott, a fast-rising star who has been winning concerto competitions since he was just 7 years old. Together, Poska, Elliott and the Minnesota Orchestra share bright, sunny music—including crowd favorites by Aaron Copland, Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Ludwig van Beethoven—in a program that invites the energy of spring into Orchestra Hall with open arms!
