With Franz Lehár, Viennese operetta experienced a noticeable upswing in the first decades of the 20th century. The new flowering of the genre, known as the “Silver Age,” is due not only to the extremely popular The Merry Widow , but also to Lehár’s late operettas from the 1920s and early 1930s, in which he consciously approached grand opera. These works are ambitious and sophisticated, and often feature prominent figures from cultural history, such as the “Devil’s Violinist” Niccolò Paganini or the “Poet Prince” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (in the operetta Friederike ). And with Giuditta , described as a “musical comedy,” he even celebrated a premiere at the Vienna State Opera. Melodic bliss and melancholy are combined in Lehár’s music in a fascinating way.

Since 1980, the Vienna Hofburg Orchestra has celebrated the New Year with its guests, performing waltzes and polkas by the Strauss family. The program is rounded off by arias, duets, and quartets performed by four renowned opera singers.

After the director Herbert Fritsch captivated audiences with an extravagant symphony concert in 2024, this guest concept is now becoming a favourite tradition at the Komische Oper Berlin. This time, the spotlight falls on the charismatic actor Ulrich Matthes, who steps in as concert curator. Under the theme of ‘boldly stepping forth’, he launches the new year with a dazzling programme while offering personal insights into his favourite musical works. Here, the bright optimism of Mozart’s ‘Linz Symphony’ (1st movement) meets the reverent Adagio from Schumann’s Second Symphony. The jazz-infused energy of Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F major meets with Bernstein’s playful Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. And after his 2014 performance as a narrator at a symphony concert with the Komische Oper—who knows? This time, Ulrich Matthes just might take the leap into song...

In the festive atmosphere of Wiesbaden's Kurhaus, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra (hr-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt) traditionally welcomes the new year with an entertaining and artistically first-class program – this time under the direction of the young Belarusian conductor Vitali Alekseenok. Alongside the well-known overture "The Bartered Bride" by Bedřich Smetana, the "Wiesbaden Master Concerts" will also feature the unconventional Cello Concerto by Friedrich Gulda, performed by the internationally acclaimed young cellist Anastasia Kobekina, as well as Zoltán Kodály's "Dances of Galánta" and Maurice Ravel's "La valse."

Who would have thought back then – that this son, born exactly 200 years ago, would one day become a waltz king. One whose works have been among the most performed for what feels like an eternity. One who, in terms of song output, can really only be compared to Michael Jackson or Paul McCartney. Johann Strauss II, the son of his father of the same name, with strong Viennese roots and a heart beating in triple time, created sparkling waltz and polka hits that have stood the test of time and that almost everyone can whistle along to. Not just on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, but then with particular zip. Chief conductor Nicholas Milton lives up to his reputation and peppers the program with little interludes from other composers. Cheers!

Soloists from the Graz Opera ensemble will celebrate the start of New Year 2026 with a generous helping of Italianità together with the Graz Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of their longstanding conductor Marius Burkert! Titles by Austrian composers such as Robert Stolz’s “Arrivederci bella Italia” or “Wo die Zitronen blühn” by Johann Strauss Sohn make the longing and wanderlust for the country in which “everything dissolves into peace and serenity” audible. One always remains clear, always equanimous, always objectively tuned”.

The kickoff to the anniversary year! 100 years after the opening of the planetarium, which later became the Tonhalle, the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra's programs feature a wealth of music from 1926. From a time when operetta was still flourishing, Berlin was becoming a hotspot of modernism, and music was moving along increasingly international paths. Axel Kober and our orchestra ignite musical rockets that—like this era of transition—shine in a variety of colors.

Beethoven's freedom opera "Fidelio" was already on the program at the beginning of the season, a work that ends with an emphatic choral finale in which the humanistic convictions of its creator burst forth in powerful sound. And this also applies to his 9th Symphony, a work with which Beethoven, so to speak, embraces all of humanity. "All men become brothers," it says in Schiller's "Ode to Joy," which Beethoven used as the text for his magnificent finale. While people probably didn't know what was happening to them at the premiere—a powerful choral finale in a symphony had never been seen before—Beethoven's music already swept the euphoric audience to their feet. Since then, the 9th Symphony, and especially its final movement, has become a true global hit. For example, the Council of Europe declared the instrumental prelude to the "Ode to Joy" the European anthem in 1972. Stefan Blunier, who returns to the podium of the Duisburg Philharmonic twice this season, conducts an exquisite quartet of soloists in a work that could hardly be more relevant even in our time.
