Jun Märkl Conducts Beethoven's 7th

The ISO flexes its musical muscles with three show-stopping concertos. Paul Huang joins us for Barber’s gorgeous Violin Concerto, and composer Gabriela Lena Frank takes us to her hometown in the Peruvian Mountains in a “little concerto” for orchestra. Music Director Jun Märkl leads the ISO in Bartók’s virtuosic Concerto for Orchestra, a piece that challenges every member of the ensemble!

Till Eulenspiegel follows the exploits of a noted trickster — but doesn’t fool around — the super virtuosic work is a freewheeling tour de force for every member of the Orchestra, beginning with a famous French horn solo. CSO Principal Horn Elizabeth Freimuth steps into the spotlight with a popular early concerto by Strauss and Debussy’s impressionistic Images create the musical equivalent of a Monet masterpiece.

Mozart and Mahler

Inspired by a lifelong passion for the sea, Debussy's La Mer shimmers with orchestral colors in musical portraits of tranquil waves, brewing storms, and the sun's celestial journey across a radiant sky. And soloist Paul Huang brings his "stylish and polished playing" (Strad) to Korngold's Violin Concerto, which marries European romanticism with the gilded glamour of Hollywood film scores.

Impressions of the Sea

The ISO winds shine bright as Jun Märkl leads this colorful set of works. The program opens with Ravel’s take on the vibrant dance rhythms of Spain. ISO principal oboe Jennifer Christen and principal bassoon Ivy Ringel team up to perform a new double concerto by Indianapolis-based composer Hanna Benn. Berlioz invites us into his wildest dreams in his psychedelic love letter, Symphonie fantastique.
