Founded by Arthur Mitchell, who was the first African-American principal dancer of New York City Ballet, the company is steeped in the neoclassical style developed by George Balanchine. The current artistic director and resident choreographer, Robert Garland, has choreographed contemporary ballets to the music of Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, and Motown music. The company’s most recent performance at the Detroit Opera House in 2022 featured Claudia Schreier’s Passage, a work commissioned to mark the 400th year of the arrival of enslaved Africans in North America, and Higher Ground, a ballet set to songs by Stevie Wonder.

In his first season as Music Director, Roberto Kalb brings the Detroit Opera Orchestra onstage for a concert featuring superstar singers including soprano Christine Goerke (Detroit Opera’s Associate Artistic Director), baritone Rod Gilfry, tenor Arturo Chacón-Cruz, soprano Mané Galoyan, countertenor Key’mon Murrah, and Detroit Opera’s Resident Artists. Ten-time Detroit Music Award-winning jazz band Planet D Nonet presents their critically acclaimed project, Blues to Be There. Led by Detroit percussionist RJ Spangler and trumpeter James O’Donnell, the band revives music from Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s more obscure catalog and breathes new life into forgotten jazz and blues classics over the past 15 years. For example, they have taken care of Fletcher Henderson, Buddy Johnson, Sun Ra, and South African jazz, among others.

Augustin Hadelich, a violinist whose rhapsodic expressiveness has gained worldwide attention, solos in not one but two works for violin and orchestra. Stravinsky’s concerto blends neoclassical clarity and proportion with rich, playful textures. Violin Concerto in A major, Op. 5, No. 2 by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, is a delicate work by a contemporary of Mozart and Haydn. JoAnn Falletta also conducts a new piece by Brian Raphael Nabors, as well as Kodály’s work infused with the sounds of Central European folk music.
